Overview
The post holder will have management and leadership responsibilities, assisting the management team in implementing change projects within departments to enhance patient care and positive patient experiences. They will support Theatre managers in all aspects of their role, including deputising in their absence, appraisals, sickness absence management, mandatory training, audits and staff deployment. They will coordinate the theatre as required and should be flexible with their management responsibilities.
The role involves delivering Trust Objectives and ensuring care within this specialty reflects the Trust Vision and Values. The post holder will mentor, develop and train junior staff and students, and act as a role model for other staff. They should recognise their limitations and seek advice and support from senior staff.
The staff will work Day shifts, Long days, Nights, Weekends and On-call shifts on a full-time basis. They will be involved in anaesthetic and surgical support tasks as required, including scrub duties, equipment availability, and clinical area organisation.
Responsibilities- Provide high standards of patient care and assist anaesthetists or surgeons during surgical procedures as scrub.
- Coordinate the availability of surgical equipment from SSD or off-site processing.
- Assist and contribute to the management and organisation of the clinical area; set and maintain high standards of quality care.
- Collaborate with others to meet patient and family needs; assess, plan, implement and evaluate care programmes.
- Consider new ways of working to enhance patient care and reduce costs.
- Coordinate patient discharge in accordance with NGH discharge policy; educate patients and carers as required.
- Adhere to safety precautions to minimise risks; assist in cleaning schedules and maintain a safe department environment.
- Complete patient documentation accurately; maintain confidentiality of patient information.
- Manage medications (including controlled drugs) safely; support learning culture from patient experience and improvement plans.
- Undertake expanded roles as needed following Trust policy; participate in education, supervision and CPD of staff and students.
- Promote effective communication both written and verbal; supervise junior staff in care delivery.
- Participate in safe movement and handling of patients within the operating department and other Trust areas; protect patient privacy and dignity.
- Provide support during regional or local anaesthesia; safely escort patients, relatives and carers; assist with stock control and theatrical restocking as required.
- Facilitate training opportunities, mentoring and CPD for juniors and students; report faults in equipment to senior staff or clinical engineering.
- Conduct local inductions for new staff, bank staff and agency staff; participate in departmental meetings and change implementation.
- Communicate clearly with patients, relatives and team members; answer questions within scope of knowledge.
- Lead by example with drive and enthusiasm; support nursing and HCPC guidelines and codes of practice as applicable.
- Support departmental culture of open and honest professional decision making and problem solving; act as lead/coordinator when required.
- Develop the department, implement changes to improve services; provide mentorship and regular professional development support to junior staff.
- Assist in sickness absence management; coordinate and lead main theatre teams; manage budget awareness and equipment maintenance programs.
- Promote patient safety and risk management; minimise clinical risk using available resources; support preceptees and education programmes for new nurses and midwives.
- Support and promote clinical audits and quality improvement; assist in decision-making processes and administrative tasks as required.
- Work closely with management to meet departmental needs; conduct local inductions for new starters and bank staff.
- Deal with emergencies competently; manage time effectively and seek support when needed.
- Maintain department equipment and stock levels (equipment, linen, catering supplies, sterile services, consumables); be aware of staff rosters and skill mix.
- Adhere to Trust values and participate in regular performance reviews; maintain mandatory training and professional development; uphold NMC/HCPC codes of conduct where applicable.
- Keep up-to-date with Trust policies; identify learning needs and develop Personal Development Plans; act as a role model for new starters and junior staff.
