Biomedical Support Worker - Histopathology Job overview
Posts are available in the Histopathology Department. This is an exciting opportunity to join an excellent team that handles around 70,000 surgical requests a year in a busy teaching hospital laboratory.
The department has recently upgraded equipment and is implementing a fully digital reporting service.
Main duties of the job- Sort, label and process patient specimens from operating theatres, wards, clinics, post‑mortem room and GP surgeries.
- Enter patient data into the Pathology computer system, assist with specimen dissection and participate in technical roles such as routine section cutting and tissue embedding.
- Prepare solutions, file and retrieve archive material, perform daily equipment maintenance and cleaning tasks.
- Assist with the digital scanning service.
The role provides essential support to Pathologists and Biomedical Scientists. Opportunities to learn laboratory technical skills and further training/study are available depending on experience and qualifications.

- Participate in the maintenance of laboratory equipment according to standard protocols and report any faults to senior BMS staff.
- File and retrieve laboratory request forms, blocks and slides when required.
- Perform basic stock control duties and take appropriate action.
- Work as part of a team in specimen reception and cut‑up, the main laboratory, immunohistochemistry and digital scanning areas on rotation.
- Use laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and other Trust IT platforms.

this role does not meet the UKVI eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa and the Trust would not be able to issue a Certificate of Sponsorship.
- Some experience of working in a laboratory.
- Excellent communication and inter‑personal skills.
- Methodical, precise and able to work accurately to deadlines.
- Awareness of the need to maintain personal health, safety and that of colleagues.
