This PhD project aims to model and analyse component- and system-level reliability, availability, and resilience of hydrogen systems
, including electrolysers and their Balance of Plant (BoP) systems. The focus is on supporting safety, sustainability, and carbon reduction goals by:
- Developing advanced diagnostics and prognostics for early detection of deterioration and failure modes
- Creating system-level reliability models to improve operational safety
- Designing asset management tools to inform inspection and maintenance decisions
- Enhancing system adaptability and emergency response mechanisms
Hydrogen energy is rapidly gaining attention as part of global net‑zero carbon strategies, but challenges in reliability, safety, and cost currently limit its adoption. This project addresses these challenges using advanced modelling and analysis techniques.
Entry Requirements- 1st class degree in Engineering, Mathematics, or related discipline, preferably at Masters level
- In exceptional cases, a 2:1 degree may be considered
- Open to UK, EU, and international students
- Enthusiastic candidates with a strong interest in hydrogen systems and energy resilience
Funding sources may be available; early applications are encouraged.
