PhD Studentship:
Modelling Reliability and Resilience of Hydrogen Systems for Improved Safety and Sustainability

University of Nottingham invites applications for the above PhD studentship.

Area: Engineering

Location: UK (Other)

Closing Date: Sunday 25 January 2026

Reference: ENG
286

Project supervisor: Rasa Remenyte‑Prescott, Faculty of Engineering, Resilience Engineering Research Group

Project Aim

Model and analyse component and system level reliability, availability and resilience of hydrogen systems.

Background

Driven by climate change and net‑zero carbon targets, green hydrogen demand is rising. Commercial adoption is limited by reliability, safety and cost challenges of electrochemical systems.

Proposed Project

The project will develop comprehensive modelling and analysis for hydrogen systems such as electrolysers and their Balance of Plant (BoP) systems, addressing:

  • Advanced diagnostics and prognostics of early deterioration and failure modes.
  • System‑level reliability analysis models for improved safety.
  • Asset management models to support inspection and maintenance decisions.
  • Improved system adaptability and enhanced emergency response mechanisms due to failures and external disturbances.

This work aims to improve safety, efficiency and uptake of hydrogen energy solutions, thereby reducing carbon emissions.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold a 1st class degree in engineering, maths or a relevant discipline, preferably at Master’s level (a 2:1 degree may be considered in exceptional circumstances). The role starts in October 2026.
