Job SummaryWe require proactive and hardworking staff to work as part of a team within Cleaning Services. The role involves cleaning in clinical and non‑clinical areas, maintaining the highest standard of cleanliness, safety and care.
Responsibilities- Ensure a timely and accurate response to all cleaning requests.
- Work in partnership with the Ward Team, Facilities Team Leader/Assistant Facilities Manager.
- Assist in monitoring and maintaining cleaning standards and infection control practices in the department.
- Maintain the department’s reputation through effective communication and harmonious attitudes with patients, staff and visitors.
- Ensure patient dignity and privacy is respected at all times and report any breaches.
- Use and assemble cleaning equipment safely; order stock.
- Use effective and efficient cleansing/decontamination techniques across a range of skills.
- Suction clean, dry mop floors, spot‑clean floors and remove spillages.
- High dusting, damp dusting of furniture, fixtures, fittings and ledges.
- Spot‑clean internal glass as necessary.
- Cleans wash hand basins, sinks, showers, WCs and fittings; replenish supplies.
- Cleans beds and bedside lockers.
- Cleanse and refill soap dispensers and paper towel holders.
- Remove waste from wards and departments to designated collection points.
- Use polishing/scrubbing machines for hard‑floor maintenance.
- Use extraction machines for carpet and upholstery cleaning.
- Perform routine curtain changes (bed, window, screen curtains).
- Make up on‑call and relatives overnight stay beds.
- Operate ride‑on cleaning equipment such as sweeper, scrubber dryer and burnishing equipment.
- Undertake any other relevant duties delegated from time to time.
- Handle cleaning agents safely and maintain dilution ratios; keep hazardous chemicals in secure storage.
- Decontaminate all cleaning equipment daily and report faults to a Facilities Team Leader.
- Attend training courses, on‑the‑job training and machinery training as required.
- Decontaminate and keep cupboards tidy at all times.
- Clean infected rooms/bays in accordance with NUH Infection Control & Prevention Policy.
- Collaborate with cleaning services, team leaders and ward managers to identify additional cleans such as isolation rooms and bed‑space terminals.
- Act as a buddy to new starters after training.
- Wear a clean protective uniform at all times and use relevant PPE in accordance with Trust policies.
- Demonstrate cleaning procedures to new starters.
- Complete timesheets or similar work records.
- Maintain concentration while using cleaning equipment.
- Perform isolation cleansing as required following Infection Control Isolation Policy and Procedures.
- Work in accordance with Trust’s Policies and Procedures, including COSHH, Manual Handling, Health and Safety, Infection Control and attend annual training.
- Descale baths, toilets, shower heads, tiles using specialist chemicals.
- Carry out specialist cleaning when required, with relevant training in:
- Theatres
- Pharmacy
- Laboratories
- Labour Suite
- Bioquell Training (Decontamination)
- Knowledge or training equivalent to NVQ Level 1/2 in Cleaning and Support Services.
- Intermediate Apprenticeship in Facilities Services Level 2 or equivalent training.
- Knowledge of cleaning/hygiene COSHH procedures.
- Cleaning in a domestic environment with knowledge of cleaning procedures and processes.
- Experience of working/communicating with the general public.
- Experience of working within a team.
- Previous experience of cleaning in a commercial capacity.
- Experience of working in a healthcare environment.
- Good working knowledge of health and safety issues.
