Job Summary

Are you looking for a career in Emergency Medicine in a large UK teaching hospital with a Major Trauma Centre?

The Emergency Department at Nottingham University Hospitals' NHS Trust is excited to be able to offer opportunities for motivated doctors to join our friendly Emergency Medicine team from 1st April 2026 for 12 months. One post is to cover maternity leave.

You will have the opportunity to work in a forward‑thinking, dynamic department which is committed to the Trust's ambition of developing staff and delivering outstanding healthcare outcomes for patients.

Main duties of the job

Working in our ED encompasses many management skills such as managing the shop floor, keeping to the four‑hour target and constant reprioritisation of tasks.

You will be supported to work through competencies to develop portfolio evidence to meet your set objectives and will work under the clinical direction of EM Consultants who are present in the department 24/7. All Fellows will have a monthly teaching day along with educational development time reflected on your rota. You will be allocated an Educational and Clinical supervisor.

About us

Located in one of the friendliest and greenest cities in the UK, Nottingham University Hospitals Trust (NUH) is a Major Trauma Centre and our ED is one of the busiest in Europe, seeing 179,940 new patients a year across co‑located adult and Children and Young People departments.

NUH consists of the Queen's Medical Centre (QMC) and the Nottingham City Hospital Campuses. QMC houses our Emergency Department which has co‑located adult and children's units. NUH is the Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands region.

Our forward‑thinking, research‑active Emergency Department is one of the busiest in Europe with 195,000 new attendances annually. The Children's ED sees 44,000 children and young people and has expanded its resuscitation capability with a major capital investment.

Job description

For this round of recruitment, we are unable to accept any applications that do not have at least 2 years experience in ED in the NHS. Please note clinical attachments are not eligible to count as NHS experience; therefore your application will not be considered if you only have an attachment as your NHS experience.

We have clearly set out in our job description and person specification the essential criteria for the roles (please see below). You will be expected to meet all of the essential criteria in order to move to the shortlisting stage of the recruitment process.

For a Junior post
  • We expect you to have at least three years post MBBS (or equivalent) in addition to experience in an Emergency Department (ED).
  • To be considered for Tier 3 (CT3) level role, you will need MRCEM exam plus a minimum of 2 years in a pure ED setting in the NHS at CT1/2 level
    .
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS) qualification.
For a Senior post
  • At least six years post MBBS (or equivalent) in addition to experience in an ED.
  • ALS and ATLS qualifications.
  • MRCEM exam (full).
  • To have at least two years experience in ED in the NHS at CT3 level or higher.

These are service posts so do not have educational approval, but you will be provided with excellent training and educational opportunities, tailored to meet your individual needs.
