Intermediate and Senior Quantity Surveyors – Architectural

A.W. Hooker Associates Ltd is a medium-sized Quantity Surveying / Construction Cost Consultants company for the construction industry with over fifty years of experience in the industry. Our expertise is collective with experts in all disciplines including Architectural, Structural, Civil, Independent Certification, Mechanical, Electrical, Expert Witness and Loan Monitoring.

We are currently seeking Intermediate and Senior Quantity Surveyors / Cost Consultants / Estimators who are ambitious, goal-oriented and motivated by a challenge and have a minimum of three years experience, preferably working as a Cost Consultant. Responsibilities (not limited to)
  • Read and understand construction drawings and specifications at an advanced level
  • Prepare, coordinate & deliver estimates on your own or as part of a team (within set schedules)
  • Prepare and complete trade/elemental take-offs based on preliminary design documents
  • Complete an elemental estimate, including the preamble, customized estimate summaries, ready for review with a Supervisor or Principal‑in‑charge.
  • Interpret and understand elemental ratios for various building types
  • Assume responsibility for the scheduled completion of portions of the work, ensuring timely completion
  • Provide direction to Junior staff when required
  • Follow instructions from Supervisors or Principal‑in‑charge to organize and coordinate resources; pass on instructions to junior staff
  • Take responsibility for the work delegated to junior staff, including checking the work of other Quantity Surveyors for errors, completeness, and compliance with company standards
  • Perform gross error checks on completed elemental estimates, including checking elemental quantities, ratios, and pricing research with vendors to affirm unit rates
  • Prepare a plan for the delegation of work and effectively utilize resources in the completion of a given task
  • Assume responsibility for the scheduled completion of the work of junior staff and be conscious of how the work under their control fits into the overall project schedule; be a team player within the project team
  • Coordinate the distribution of the applicable project documentation to the various team members of the company in a timely manner
Skills and Experience
  • Minimum 3 years experience in quantity surveying, with CEC, PQS or on the path towards it
  • Knowledge of MS Excel and general computer skills, good command of English, both verbal and written
  • Experience using software for on‑screen take‑off as well as Bluebeam, Adobe, Bidscreen, Navisworks, Siteworx, etc. is an asset
  • Ability to read and visualize design from architectural drawings
  • Ability to converse with industry trades researching pricing via telephone and email
  • Driver's licence and/or own car is an asset
Qualifications / Educational Requirements
  • Completion of or working towards the PQS or CEC designation is preferred
  • Diploma in Architectural, Construction or Civil Technology, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Building Science or a related field, with an interest in pre‑construction services
