Sky News is looking for a Newsroom Front-end Developer to join our newsroom team, where technology and storytelling meet to create powerful digital experiences across our editorial and broadcast platforms.
We're after someone with a passion for creating visually compelling, technically robust, and high-impact user experiences - someone who thrives at the intersection of news, design, and development. A creative coder, with a solid news instinct and an eye for detail.
What You'll Do- Design and develop innovative, high-quality front‑end web applications for news consumers, using modern JavaScript frameworks (React.js, Redux, D3).
- Build engaging visual storytelling experiences and editorial tools for use across Sky News platforms.
- Prototype rapidly using lean methodology and test‑driven development (TDD).
- Own and maintain scalable, efficient, and resilient codebases with a focus on performance, security, and maintainability.
- Collaborate closely with journalists, designers, and backend developers to deliver seamless, impactful digital products.
- Help guide the team’s technical direction and choose the best tools for each project, working across the full software development lifecycle, from idea, design to deployment.
- Strong experience with JavaScript, especially React/Redux, D3, and the modern JS ecosystem (ES6/ES7).
- Experience with Node.js and the back‑end ecosystem, including npm and webpack.
- Experience designing and deploying serverless architectures on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) / Amazon Web Services (AWS)
- Experience with TDD and testing frameworks such as Mocha and Cypress, along with CI/CD tools like Circle
CI. - Proficiency with Git, JIRA, and modern development workflows.
- Solid understanding of web performance, security, and optimisation techniques.
- Knowledge of Python or R for data manipulation or backend scripting and familiarity with MySQL and No
SQL databases. - Experience working in a Unix/Linux environment.
- A curiosity regarding current affairs
You’ll work on projects across the newsroom, with a focus on premium story‑telling, but you’ll be based with the Data and Forensics team – a multi‑skilled unit dedicated to providing transparent journalism from Sky News.
We gather, analyse and visualise data to tell data‑driven stories. We combine traditional reporting skills with advanced analysis of satellite images, social media and other open‑source information. Through multimedia storytelling we aim to better explain the world while also showing how our journalism is done.
