Working arrangements
Please note this role does offer hybrid working, our model sets out a minimum 60% onsite / 40% home working split.
OverviewTE Magnetics, the high-temperature superconducting (HTS) division of Tokamak Energy, transforms cutting-edge HTS innovation into products that unlock new capabilities in energy, transport, and science. This role focuses on the characterisation of state-of-the-art HTS, solders, insulation, partial insulation etc. materials and direct application of findings into applied HTS technologies.
Responsibilities- Employ expertise in materials science and superconductors and superconductivity to support HTS coil development and manufacturing activities.
- Working both independently and in leadership of technicians to expand Tokamak Energy’s HTS tape quality assessment (QA) facilities and methodologies and perform QA campaigns on large quantities of HTS conductor. This will include making critical current measurements in high magnetic fields, fabricating and testing joints between HTS tapes, manufacture and testing of small coils, and many other associated tests.
- Work with key stakeholders in the wider business, including the Quality and Procurement departments, to develop robust systems for HTS tape quality control.
- Liaising with and where necessary attending international laboratories to perform external measurements in high magnetic field test facilities.
- Provide materials analysis support to magnet manufacturing teams to produce world-class HTS magnets, making use of metallurgical sample preparation and optical microscopy teams. This will include inspection of coil and joint structures to analyse their microstructures, providing expert insights and guidance based on results.
- Liaise with key external suppliers and subcontractors
- Liaise with stakeholders internal to Tokamak Energy
- Prepare technical reports and specifications
- Support commercialisation of the company’s HTS magnet technology
- Generate and document intellectual property
- Degree or equivalent experience in a relevant Engineering or Physics based discipline.
- Experience working with high temperature superconductors and/or superconducting electromagnets.
- Experience preparing samples for, conducting and interpreting images generated by optical and/or scanning electron microscopy.
- High degree of self-organisation, motivation, and commitment to working to defined timescales.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to work in a mixed team of engineers, physicists, designers, and technicians designing innovative and complex devices.
- A broad engineering experience would be useful, as HTS and the associated cryogenic systems cover many disciplines within Tokamak Energy.
- Demonstrated experience of working with electrical measurement equipment and instrumentation such as power supplies, voltmeters, magnetic field sensors and temperature sensors.
- Thorough understanding of measurement accuracy, sensitivity, precision and resolution.
- Willingness to work ‘hands on’ in a laboratory setting.
- Demonstrated track record of innovation, creativity and project delivery in a complex engineering / technology development environment.
- Salary dependent on skills and experience and will be discussed from the outset
- 25 days holiday plus bank holidays
- Discretionary 3-day festive break depending on business needs
- Eligible for discretionary performance related bonus
- Share options scheme
- Pension scheme
- Financial benefits – including; group life insurance, critical illness, health cash plan and discount scheme
- Innovation and Merit bonuses
- Investment in training and development to support career progression
- Opportunity to work on and contribute to world class innovation
