Principal Mechanical Engineer (Energy)
Join WSP in the UK & Ireland as a Principal Mechanical Engineer on our Energy Transition Team. Lead development of mechanical designs across a wide range of energy projects from inception to decommissioning, including conventional power plants, waste‑to‑energy plants, industrial facilities and carbon capture schemes.
Responsibilities- Develop cost‑effective, efficient and innovative mechanical solutions for complex projects at all stages, including feasibility studies, concept designs, FEED studies, value engineering and detailed design.
- Prepare mechanical deliverables such as calculations, equipment specifications and datasheets for turbines, compressors, pumps, pressure vessels, heat exchangers.
- Collaborate with process engineers to develop process flow diagrams and piping & instrumentation diagrams.
- Support plant layout development and 3D model creation.
- Evaluate vendor designs and engineer equipment packages.
- Provide engineering advice on plant integrity issues for operational assets.
- Develop proposals and bids for the mechanical discipline and contribute to multi‑disciplinary proposals.
- A degree in a relevant engineering subject.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards IEng/CEng and membership of a relevant engineering institute.
- Post‑graduate experience within power generation or oil & gas industry.
- Knowledge of national and international codes and standards for equipment and piping.
- Experience in pressure vessel and piping design and stress analysis.
- Experience working with mechanical designers and pipe stress engineers on plant 3D models.
- Proficiency in MS Excel, MathCAD and engineering calculation tools.
- Experience troubleshooting and problem‑solving for thermal plant operation and integrity issues.
