Position: Graduate Civil Engineer (BEng or BSc)

Overview

Engineering Design Services, Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is a civil engineering business unit within the Local Authority. The core business is the design and construction of new highway improvement schemes, and the design and maintenance of the County's highway structure assets and traffic control and information systems. This year WCC aims to appoint four new Graduate Engineers in the Highways Capital Delivery, Bridge & Structural Design, and Bridge Maintenance teams.

Teams

and Roles

The Highways Capital Delivery team comprises engineers dedicated to project delivery at both the design and construction phase, with projects including new link roads, junction improvements, cycle schemes, traffic safety schemes and town centre regeneration schemes.

The Bridge and Structural Design Team is responsible for the technical design of new highway structures, often working as part of large integrated teams across various engineering disciplines. Projects range from new highway and drainage infrastructure to the improvement or replacement of existing structural assets which are close to end of life or require a change in use.

The Bridge Maintenance Team focuses on the inspection, assessment, and maintenance of thousands of highway structures to ensure safety, functionality and longevity. Candidates will gain hands-on experience in structural asset management, monitoring infrastructure condition and planning interventions to prevent deterioration and extend service life.

Role and Duties

As a graduate civil engineer at Warwickshire County Council, you will join a diverse engineering team, assisting other engineers in delivering projects ranging from small highway improvement schemes to multi‑million‑pound infrastructure projects. Typical day-to-day work may involve any stage of a project, including:

  • The production of feasibility studies for new schemes;
  • The technical design of new highways and structures using a broad range of techniques including advanced structural modelling software and calculations;
  • Communicating and liaising with a wide range of stakeholders and members of the public;
  • Preparing and tendering construction contracts including drawings, specifications, and contract documents;
  • Construction site supervision and contract administration.
  • Applicants will need to hold a valid UK or EU passport or visa to work in the UK. It is preferable if applicants hold a full UK driving licence or intend to acquire one in the near future, as sites are located across Warwickshire.

    Qualifications and Experience

    Starting salary £31,022 per annum, with clear progression described in the Graduate Programme.

    Skills and Experience

    We need engineers who:

    • Can solve a variety of complex problems, both technical and non-technical
    • Are great communicators, with the ability to engage with a range of audiences
    • Are well-organised, with the ability to manage and maintain all types of project documentation
    • Have experience using software such as Computer Aided Design (CAD) or structural analysis software like Midas, Civil 3D, or similar

    New graduate engineers do not need prior civil engineering project experience, but candidates with a background in the field may have an advantage. Ideally you will be completing, or have already completed, an ICE-accredited BEng or BSc course with modules applicable to the work undertaken by Warwickshire County Council.

    Application notes

    If you are interested in applying for one or more of these roles, please state which roles you would like to be considered for in your supporting statement.

    For new civil engineers, a comprehensive training package and on-the-job training is provided, in addition to training courses, supported by the ICE training programme. Graduate engineers are encouraged to join the programme to help achieve Incorporated or Chartered Civil Engineer status, with Registration and Subscription fees paid by Warwickshire County Council.

    Location

    The role will be a mixture of remote working and in Warwick Town Centre at Shire Hall. There are opportunities to visit project sites predominantly located in Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull.
