Overview
Assistant Soil Science Consultant / Soil Science Consultant s role is part of the Ground & Water team within the Earth & Environment business. The position involves a mix of office and site work with significant field activities throughout the year. Location is flexible, with a roughly 50/50 split between site and office work and travel to WSP offices for team and client meetings.
WhatYou’ll Do
- Undertake soil surveys and assist in the production of reports for Development Consent Orders (DCOs), Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), and other environmental assessments with the wider environmental teams.
- Support project delivery across the UK, including data management, survey coordination and risk assessment for site works.
- Assist in producing written reports for Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), Soil Resource Assessments, and tailored assessments for Environmental Statements; support Landscape and Ecological Management Plans with our Nature Advisory and Landscape teams.
- Manage data to support technical reporting; provide advice and support to colleagues; liaise with clients, landowners, contractors, statutory authorities and third parties.
- Degree-level qualification in Soil Science, or a related field (e.g., physical geology, environmental science) with 3–5 years of relevant practical experience.
- Experience in completing ALC surveys, Soil Resource Surveys and site supervision during construction works (ideally to BSSS competency standards).
- Strong understanding of health & safety procedures for site work.
- Team player, able to work with geographically dispersed teams.
- Excellent communication and report writing skills.
- Registered with a relevant professional body (e.g., British Society of Soil Science).
- Desirable: current working knowledge of UK environmental legislation, implications of construction projects on agricultural land, and understanding of UK agricultural practice and business issues.
- Enjoy working as part of a team and being accountable for your work.
- Working knowledge of applied GIS; full driving license; willingness to work outdoors.
