Our three‑year Higher Apprenticeship Overhead Line programme will train you to become an engineer in one of our Overhead Line teams. You’ll learn everything about Overhead Lines, conductors, fittings and insulator systems, safety, overhead line refurbishment & maintenance methods, technical support, 3rd Party requests and fault fixing. At the end of the three years, you’ll have a HTQ in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (HNC) and a job waiting for you.
Responsibilities- Develop projects and safe systems of work for setting staff to work in accordance with safe practices, procedures and risk assessments
- Support the day‑to‑day management of the operational overhead line team’s resources and assets
- Respond to overhead line faults and defects as they occur
- Develop specialist technical skills to deliver a wide variety of OHL projects safely, on time and to budget
- Progress toward roles of Project Leader, Temporary Works Coordinator and Principal Contractors Representative
- Shadow experienced OHL engineers across the full range of operational work to gain new skills and knowledge while in the field
- Receive Health and Safety training leading to role‑specific authorisations
- Work away from home in a variety of zones/geographical areas to develop your skills
- Two A‑Levels, including Maths or Physics graded C or above, or a BTEC which includes a Maths or engineering module
- Five GCSEs including Maths and English Language graded 4(C) or equivalent (Functional skills L2 are acceptable)
- A valid driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK 3 months before your start date
- Ability to live away from home during training at our Eakring Training Centre in Nottinghamshire, with periods decreasing from 75% in Year 1 to 25% in Year 3
You must live within 45 minutes of SA5 7PD
to be considered for this role.
You are driven and proactive with an appetite for continuous improvement. You know how to build on your existing knowledge and skills and have the enthusiasm to run with things and try to make them better. You’re articulate and can communicate appropriately with a variety of people. You are a flexible multitasker who can do multiple jobs at the same time and still pay great attention to detail.
It doesn’t matter if you’re not academically dazzling; we want practical people with engineering mindsets who are really keen to apply themselves.
We are proud to offer a starting salary of £31,310. Benefits include a Level 4 qualification in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (HNC), 26 days annual leave plus statutory holidays, a £250 bonus depending on performance, double‑matched pension contribution scheme up to 18% of your salary, the option to buy discounted National Grid shares, financial support for study relevant to your role, and payment for one professional membership subscription.
