We’re looking for passionate Engineers to join our Highway Improvements Team in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole. This role focuses on delivering safe, sustainable infrastructure projects that benefit local communities.

Role OverviewAs an Assistant Highway Engineer you will provide specialist technical support, advice, and coordination in the design, implementation, and monitoring of highway engineering schemes. You will liaise with contractors, consultants, members of council, the public and external agencies, often acting as the key point of contact for technical inquiries.
Key Responsibilities- Brief, organise, and supervise the delivery of traffic, transportation, and minor highway schemes to meet cost, quality and time requirements.
- Coordinate and influence the work of graduates, technicians, consultants and contractors, ensuring work is delivered on time and to required standards.
- Handle queries from Members, the public and contractors, including attending meetings and public consultation events.
- Work with external bodies and agencies to align projects with joint objectives.
- Prepare technical drawings, reports, specifications, contract documents and designs for highway-related schemes.
- Conduct surveys and analyse data to support decision-making and develop recommendations for future schemes.
- Provide technical advice and evaluation on proposed projects, including commissioning audits where required.
- Maintain data and asset information to support project development and departmental record‑keeping.
- Support continuous service improvement through personal training and development.

- Diploma or degree in engineering or traffic/transportation discipline.
- Knowledge of regulations, legislation and processes related to highways.
- Familiarity with contract and project management techniques, including cost and quality control.
- Understanding of health and safety legislation as it applies to engineering, construction and maintenance.
- Experience using design and technical software such as AutoCAD, GIS, data‑bases, spreadsheets and other discipline‑specific tools.
- Experience in developing highways/traffic/transportation schemes or engineering design.
- Ability to supervise and direct the work of others, including contractors and consultants.
- Strong communication skills for technical information across diverse audiences.
- Valid UK driving licence or ability to travel between sites by public transport.
- Minimum two days a week working from the central office and project site offices.
- Availability for occasional nights and infrequent weekends.
