Reporting to the Manager Traffic Services and Road Safety, the Transportation Engineer is responsible for undertaking activities that support the planning, implementation and monitoring of projects associated with the Municipality’s annual road safety plan, traffic calming program and general operation of the transportation network. The work includes researching project background, establishing preliminary design parameters and alternatives, preparing preliminary engineering designs and specifications, project management activities, coordinating with various internal departments and providing preliminary project costs.
The position is also responsible for providing support and input into various projects and studies that impact the transportation network including, but not limited to, multi-modal and active transportation projects, development applications and other transportation related studies.

- Responsible for undertaking preliminary studies, designs, plans, specifications and cost estimates for transportation infrastructure projects related to implementation of the Road Safety Plan and Traffic Calming Program;
- Provides project management and analysis for neighbourhood traffic calming projects, and for other transportation related projects and studies;
- Assists in preparation of the Capital Budget Program including the scoping and cost estimating of projects, and coordination with other departments;
- Represents Traffic & Parking Management on internal and external project and technical steering committees;
- Prepares terms of reference and project manages studies undertaken by outside consultants;
- Prepares and evaluates requests for proposals for consultant engineering services related to traffic / transportation engineering projects;
- Prepares and evaluates requests for quotation for standing offers for the supply and delivery of various equipment and services;
- Responsible to review and research new technology and equipment to be used for road safety improvements;
- Prepares and provides input for reports to senior management, Regional Council and Standing Committees;
- Liaise and consult with general public, elected officials, consultants and other government agencies as required;
- Provides support in the review of development applications, road reconstruction projects, and intersection designs;
- Degree in Civil Engineering from a recognized university;
- Four years experience in the field of traffic/transportation engineering, municipal engineering, road safety, and transportation planning in a municipal/urban transportation environment;
- Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with Engineers Nova Scotia (or eligible for registration);
- Valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License.
- Highly proficient in application of transportation and traffic engineering guidelines including Transportation Association of Canada Geometric Design Guidelines, Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Canada;
- Moderate to high level of proficiency in roadway design, traffic signal design, underground services, traffic operations, pedestrian system and transit system design principles;
