Location:

Cheadle or Templecombe - Hybrid. Thales Underwater Systems covers a broad portfolio of engineering challenges in remotely operated unmanned vessels for maritime/naval operations, including sonar capabilities for surface and submarine platforms worldwide, and support for in-service sonar systems.

This role involves leading safety engineering tasks for major projects including autonomous systems development and future flagship naval programmes.

• Lead the delivery of safety engineering activities for UWS projects, ensuring the delivery of all safety artefacts and requirements in a timely manner.
• Act as the main Point of Contact for Safety Expertise to projects, supporting the Project Design Authority and other engineering functions.
• Liaise with the customer representative for all safety related activities.
• Ensure safety management approaches comply with Thales processes and customer requirements, including Def Stan 00-056 or MIL STD 882.
• Raise concerns regarding product safety or policies, and support/lead Product Safety Investigations to resolve issues.
• Support the UWS Safety Assurance Manager and Safety Authority to ensure all UWS projects and systems are adequately safe.

• In-depth knowledge of Safety Management Processes and experience delivering Safety Engineering activities.
• Experience with hazard identification and assessment techniques and IT-based Hazard Log management systems.
• Knowledge of product environmental, material and safety-related Legislation, Regulation and Standards.
• Experience with in the Defence Domain and working with Defence Standards is desirable, or knowledge of equivalent safety management processes from similar safety-critical domains.
• Experience of Functional and/or Software Safety; knowledge of Def Stan 00-055 or IEC 61508 is desirable, though not required.
• Knowledge of engineering lifecycle management and its requirements and application.

This role will require SC Clearance. It would be advantageous if currently held; if not, the successful applicant will undergo and maintain SC Clearance. Eligibility details: residency in the UK for the last 5 years, with possible exceptions as described by the NSV framework.
