About the RoleEnsuring the future of electricity transmission – we consider engineering a legacy that keeps the lights on for generations. As a Higher Apprenticeship Substations engineer you will learn to transform high‑voltage electricity into low‑voltage electricity for homes and businesses, working on testing, safety, protection, refurbishment, maintenance, technical support, problem diagnosis and fault fixing.
Responsibilities- Deliver all work with safety at the heart of actions and decisions.
- Work towards Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status.
- Lead teams of fitters and contractors on high‑voltage substation projects, ensuring risk assessments, method statements and toolbox talks are in place.
- Manage and review progress on safety‑critical works.
- Act as temporary works co‑ordinator and principal contractor under CDM regulations.
- Join a standby rota for emergency call‑outs and earn additional payments.
During the three‑year programme you will receive on‑the‑job training and attend a Higher National Certificate (HNC) course in Electrical Power Protection & Plant Commissioning.
- Year 1 – approximately 75% on‑site at Eakring Training Centre (Nottinghamshire) and 25% in Loughborough.
- Year 2 – approximately 50% on‑site and 50% in Loughborough.
- Year 3 – approximately 25% on‑site and 75% in Loughborough.
This role is based across the West London region; you will be expected to travel within a 45‑minute drive of postcode KT15 3LA
.
- Two A‑Levels (Maths or Physics C or above) or a BTEC with a Maths or Engineering module.
- Valid UK driving licence (must be available three months before start).
- Ability to live away from home during training.
- Driven, proactive, and adaptable communication skills.
- Practical engineering mindset and keen to apply yourself.
- Starting salary of £31,310.
