Job Summary

Successful applicants that hold the ACC qualification can expect £2,500 uplift in addition to their Band 5 salary per year.

Following a detailed review of the Trust's Clinical Coding Service, an exciting opportunity has arisen within the department for full‑time ACC qualified coder with enthusiasm and motivation to join our extremely busy Clinical Coding Department. The post holder will be responsible for the clinical coding of all acute specialties, abstracting clinical data from patient records and translating it into diagnostic (ICD
10) and procedure (OPCS) coding classifications.

We are a centralised coding team with coding offices on two sites. Coders can work on site full time, remotely, or in a hybrid arrangement. Our source documentation is a mix of paper and electronic records, with a drive towards fully electronic patient records.

Residential candidates are welcome; those outside the geographical area may also apply for remote working.

Main Duties

The Clinical Coding Team performs an extremely important role in the information and financial flows of the Trust and is a source of healthcare data for the Department of Health (DOH) and World Health Organisation (WHO). As an Accredited Clinical Coder, you will have experience of coding a variety of specialties within an acute NHS organisation. You will adopt a flexible and adaptable approach, striving to create accurate coded data that meets national clinical coding standards, rules and conventions.

Qualifications
  • Good general education to GCSE level with Maths and English.
  • Relevant NVQ3 / A levels or equivalent. Pass in the National Clinical Coding Qualification (ACC).
  • Attended NHS Classifications Service (NHSCS) foundation course.
  • Evidence of attendance at a nationally approved Refresher Training Course within the last three years.
  • Evidence of attendance at nationally approved Specialty Workshops.
  • Ongoing relevant experience and development to degree‑equivalent level.
Desirable
  • Degree in Sciences/Biology.
Experience Essential
  • Extensive experience working as a clinical coder following foundation training.
  • Experience working within the NHS or other relevant healthcare service.
Desirable
  • Experience using encoding/Hospital Systems.
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities Essential
  • Maintain a standard of 90 % accuracy across all specialties.
  • Maintain productivity levels meeting the needs of the current or previous coding post.
  • Profound knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Excellent knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
Desirable
  • Maintain a standard of 95 % accuracy across all specialties.
  • Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy/physiology.
  • Ability to present complex coding rules and standards to non‑coding, technical professionals.
