Job overview

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a Trainee Engineering Technician within our Orthotic Research and Locomotor Assessment Unit.

The role involves training an engineering technician to provide rehabilitation engineering and medical device support services both at the hospital, in the community and beyond. The postholder will play a key role in the design, manufacture, monitoring and maintenance of orthotic devices and other assistive technologies that are used to enhance the treatment of severely disabled patients and will involve contact with patients, including children who have moderate to severe mobility disabilities.

The post-holder will already hold BTEC National Certificate/Diploma or City & Guilds in an engineering subject or through their application demonstrates an equivalent combination of training and experience within mechanical engineering. It would also be desirable to have an aptitude for electronics/computing. Such a background will provide the basis for a programme of personal development once in post to gain the wider expertise necessary to fulfil the role.

We are seeking a highly compassionate individual who will work sensitively and effectively with patients with disabling conditions, as part of a multi-professional team.

This advert may close early in the event of sufficient applications being received, applicants are encouraged to apply early.

Main duties of the job

Assist the Senior Engineering Technician (and other Rehab Engineering staff) in the build, supply and maintenance of patient devices, to customary levels of engineering precision. Assist with general tasks around the workshop, such as maintenance, tidying and stock level monitoring.

Assist the Movement Analysis team with routine tasks, such as video recording patient activity and safely transferring those recordings to relevant storage media.

Assist the Patient Pathway Co-ordinator in the general administration of patient devices, such as parcelling and sending devices to patients and checking devices have arrived from suppliers.

Under current Home Office Immigration Rules, this role does not meet the UK Visas and Immigration criteria and the position is not therefore eligible for skilled worker sponsorship. Applications from candidates that require skilled worker sponsorship will NOT be shortlisted.
