Our data infrastructure team is responsible for all things data — data lake, data pipelines, distributed query engines, experimentation framework, data dashboards and visualization tools, and more. Our data ecosystem uses open source technologies like Kafka, Hive, Trino, Spark and Airflow, along with in-house systems. As a team member you would design and scale our infrastructure, improve reliability, work with other teams to build tooling, and promote correct use of data across the company.

We seek someone excited by optimizing, enhancing, or redesigning our data architecture and pipelines to support next-generation data initiatives.

• Migrating a decade of Redshift usages to Trino at Quora:
  Transforming the data ecosystem for better efficiency and performance.
• Revamping the Spark ecosystem at Quora:
  Elevating Spark to empower engineering teams.
• Adopting Trino’s fault-tolerant execution mode at Trino Summit 2023:
  Sharing insights on building resilience in data processing.

• Design and implement scalable and efficient data architectures to meet needs of data scientists, engineers and business partners
• Identify and implement improvements to reduce data storage and processing costs
• Model structured and unstructured data; own data models at a high level and act as a data consultant for partner teams
• Champion best practices on system usage and uphold high-quality code standards
• Participate in the on-call rotation to help resolve reliability incidents

• Availability for meetings during Quora's “coordination hours" (Mon-Fri: 9am-3pm Pacific Time)
• 4+ years of experience in Data Infrastructure
• Flexibility to work on different Data Engineering systems and prioritize company needs
• Operational mindset with problem diagnosis, root cause analysis, performance tuning and incident management
• Proficiency in Python and SQL query design
• Experience with big data processing frameworks (Hive, Spark, Trino)
• Experience building data-intensive applications (high velocity/high volume)
• Experience with SQL/No
  
  SQL data stores and data lake operations

• Hands-on experience with AWS technologies like S3, EC2, RDS, EKS or Apache Iceberg
• Flexible and positive team player with good interpersonal skills

• US candidates: salary range is $155,656 - $225,160 USD + equity + benefits
• Canada candidates (Toronto/Vancouver): $201,613 - $233,311 CAD + equity + benefits; other locations in Canada: $188,172 - $217,757 CAD + equity + benefits
