Principal Machine Learning Engineer

Overview

Principal Machine Learning Engineer rid role with the expectation of working at least 3 days a week from one of our office hubs in San Francisco or Toronto.

• Help define and drive the technical vision at Even Up, identifying the most impactful opportunities in generative AI and ensuring the company remains at the forefront of the rapidly evolving Document AI landscape.
• Invent and deliver the next generation of Document AI and Conversational AI, enabling robust understanding, reasoning, and generation across diverse legal and medical documents, as well as natural, accurate, and context-aware interactions with users through conversational interfaces.
• Lead research-to-production innovation in:
  Information Extraction & Reasoning;
  Generative Workflows;
  Conversational AI;
  Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG);
  Evaluation & Trust;
  Efficient Training & Adaptation.
• Shape Even Up’s ML strategy and technical roadmap, working with product, engineering, and leadership to ensure our Document AI capabilities directly drive company growth and customer impact.
• Act as a company-wide thought leader in generative AI, providing strategic advice to executives and influencing not just what we build, but how we prioritize and compete.
• Mentor and elevate the ML organization, fostering a culture of deep technical rigor, creativity, and excellence.

• 12+ years of experience in machine learning, with a proven record of shipping multiple systems at scale and advancing the state of the art.
• PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, or related quantitative field, or equivalent experience demonstrating mastery.
• Recognized expertise in large-scale ML and LLMs, with strong publication, patent, or open-source contributions a plus.
• Ability to define and drive a technical vision that aligns with company strategy, even under uncertainty.
• Strong track record of innovation in deep learning, generative models, reinforcement learning, or probabilistic methods, with direct impact on real-world systems.
• Hands-on mastery of modern ML tool chains and programming (Python, PyTorch, Tensor Flow, distributed training, large-scale data systems).
• Exceptional ability to translate cutting-edge research into robust, practical solutions that move the needle for customers.
• Demonstrated thought leadership and influence across organizations, with the ability to set standards and inspire others.
