Position: Freelance Interpreter (English/Barka [Berka] Kunama)
Organization: MCIS Language Solutions
Locations: Remote (travel to assignments as needed)

Base: CA $20.00/hr - CA $25.00/hr (based on experience and assignment type).

Part-time, Casual, Freelance

• Interpretation:
  Provide accurate, clear, and professional interpretation between English and Barka (Berka) Kunama in community settings, including healthcare, legal, and other high‑pressure environments.
• Cultural Sensitivity:
  Demonstrate cultural awareness when working with diverse communities, ensuring meaning and tone are faithfully conveyed while respecting cultural nuances.
• Reading and Oral Translation:
  Read and orally translate written materials such as application forms, medical records, or legal documents.
• Facilitating Access to Services:
  Support vulnerable populations by breaking down linguistic barriers in crucial interactions.
• Travel:
  Travel to assignment locations as required; must have reliable transportation.
• Remote Assignments:
  Handle over‑the‑phone or video interpretation assignments; can work from home where applicable.
• Professionalism and Confidentiality:
  Maintain high professionalism and confidentiality while interpreting sensitive information.

• Fluency in English and Barka (Berka) Kunama (both written and spoken).
• Reading Proficiency:
  Ability to read and interpret written documents accurately.
• Soft Skills:
  
  Excellent interpersonal skills, empathy, patience, and a commitment to service.
• Transportation:
  Ability to travel to different locations as needed; reliable transportation.
• Legal Eligibility:
  Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

• Training:
  New interpreters receive a free online training module, which must be completed before work.
• Experienced Interpreters:
  Experience and certification in community interpreting welcomed.
