The Role

The RFU is evolving its strategic approach to purpose bringing together environmental, social and inclusion initiatives under Impact; ensuring the Union has the right capacity and expertise to embed impact focussed activities into everything that we do. We are looking for an experienced environmental sustainability professional who has worked in sport venue operations or a relevant field to help us on this journey.

From threading environmental sustainability into our Stadium operations to developing guidance tools for the community game this role will report into the RFU Venue Operations Director with a dotted reporting line into the Impact Director working with the respective teams wider RFU staff and community game leaders to deliver the RFU’s five-year environmental action plan.

You will work across two different departments. The small but dynamic Impact team has responsibility across the organisation supporting our people to operate in a thoughtful and inclusive way and maximising positive social, economic and health outcomes for our activities. The Venue teams focus is on looking after the stadium and our other properties and delivering our globally famous events in a fun, memorable and completely safe manner.

The majority of the team are in the office most days though there is also the opportunity to work from home during the week.

Key responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Venue Operations Director and Head of Facilities to agree, monitor, gather and analyse relevant data sources to understand the environmental impact of Allianz Stadium both on event and non-event days and of any other RFU activities more broadly, particularly as that data relates to carbon emissions.
  • Work closely with the Stadium Development Director to support decision making related to the redevelopment particularly as it relates to the use of energy and other environmental resources.
  • In conjunction with the Health Safety and Environment Manager develop and own the Environmental Management System for the RFU’s business, supporting or owning any external auditing accreditation and reporting processes in particular ISO and 20121.
  • Undertake continuous professional development to stay across changes to environmental standards, guidance, regulation, legislation and best practice at a local, regional and national level.
  • Maintain membership and close links with relevant industry organisations such as BASIS and close links with other stadia and sporting organisations across London and more widely where possible.
  • Work closely with the Impact Director to deliver the organisation’s Impact plan and produce regular impact reports.
  • Create policies and guidelines relating to key environmental impact areas, working across departments to support the effective implementation of policies and guidelines.
  • Create and distribute clear and concise guidance and support to the community game enabling clubs up and down the country to understand best practice and take tangible actions to drive positive change.
  • Work closely with the community game communications team to engage and communicate effectively with the game and celebrate and case-study best practice.
