Mid-Level Java Developer

Chester - 2 days per week.

£45,000 - £55,000 + annual bonus and 30 days holiday + bh.

I'm hiring for a couple of mid-level Java Developers for one of my biggest clients in financial services. A bank but a tech-led organisation with a mission to build secure, scalable digital products that genuinely improve people’s lives. As they continue to invest in their engineering capability, they’re looking for talented Java Developers who thrive in collaborative environments, enjoy problem-solving, and want to make a meaningful impact through their work.

As a Software Engineer, you’ll help design, build and improve modern applications across our platforms. You will:

• Develop, test and deliver backend and frontend services.
• Build and deploy containerised applications using Docker and Kubernetes.
• Work with DDD and TDD approaches to produce reliable, maintainable software.
• Collaborate closely with Product Owners, Architects and Quality Engineers.
• Integrate with internal systems and third-party APIs to support seamless user journeys.
• Contribute ideas to engineering discussions and help improve how we deliver software.

Backend Development

• Commercial experience with Java, including building and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Familiarity with frameworks like Spring Boot (and knowledge of Node.js is a bonus, not essential).

Dev Ops & Cloud

• Exposure to CI / CD tools such as Git Hub Actions, Jenkins or Harness.
• Understanding of Docker and containerisation principles.
• Awareness of orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
• Experience with any cloud platform — GCP preferred, but AWS or Azure is great too.

Quality, Testing & Automation

• Experience with testing tools such as Jest, Cypress, Pact, or similar.
• A commitment to writing maintainable, well-tested code.
