Senior Backend Engineer at SurrealDB

DB is seeking a highly skilled Senior Backend Engineer to lead the design, development, and maintenance of our cloud‑based backend infrastructure. Based in London or the U.S. East Coast, you will build scalable, secure, and high‑availability services that support our dynamic engineering team.
- Lead the design and implementation of scalable backend services and APIs in the cloud.
- Develop and maintain cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP) ensuring high availability, scalability, and security.
- Design, implement, and manage databases (SQL, No
SQL), optimizing for performance and reliability. - Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code in Go or Rust.
- Collaborate closely with frontend developers, product managers, and other stakeholders to deliver high‑quality software solutions.
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers, fostering continuous learning and improvement.
- Implement and advocate for best security practices, ensuring data protection and compliance with relevant regulations.
- Participate in on‑call rotations.
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines, automating deployment processes to streamline release cycles.
- Experience in backend development with a focus on cloud‑based solutions.
- Experience building public‑facing APIs in Go or Rust.
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Experience deploying to Kubernetes.
- Solid understanding of database technologies (SQL, No
SQL). - Familiarity with HTTP, Web Sockets, RESTful APIs, gRPC and other communication protocols.
- Experience with CI/CD tooling (Git Hub Actions, Jenkins, Git Lab CI, Circle
CI). - Experience with observability and monitoring best practices.
- Experience being on‑call for production systems.
- Knowledge of infrastructure as code (Pulumi, Terraform, Cloud Formation).
- Experience with distributed systems, load balancing, and system monitoring.
- Willingness to adapt to remote work and collaborate with a remote workforce operating in different time zones.
Hybrid working approach:
Our London team requires presence in the Oxford Street office three days a week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Remote collaboration is supported for remote‑friendly roles.
