ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Clinical Manager, Access and Flow, the Occupational Therapist will be part of the Allied Health team at NHH with a primary focus as part of a Geriatric Activation Team targeting intensive intervention for patients in the Emergency Department. The Occupational Therapist (OT) will work closely with the team, patient and families providing assessment and recommendations for safe discharge to support ED diversion and admission avoidance.
The OT must be able to fulfill a multi-dimensional role of clinician, consultant, and educator of patient care.
Ability to develop, implement, document and evaluate programs in collaboration with the patient and family in conjunction with the health care team.Ability to continually assess, monitor, evaluate and revise patient care plans as necessary in conjunction with assessment findings and Physician diagnosisRecommend consultants and/ or provide adaptive equipment, splints, aids in remedial program and activities of daily livingParticipate as a member of the interdisciplinary team and consult with members of the team regarding patient care.Establish and maintain statistical data documentation for clinical and administrative progress as requiredDemonstrate knowledge, understanding and leadership skills in occupational therapy issuesAbility to facilitate educator role with patients, family members and the publicAct as a member of quality assurance programs within the department and the hospitalRecognize responsibility for continuing education to maintain professional standardsIn addition to the above, follows safe and healthy work practices and maintains a safe and healthy work environment through attendance at educational programs, use of established reporting mechanisms for injuries, illness and hazards and adherence to health and safety related policies and proceduresQUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS
Graduate from an approved School of Occupational Therapy from an accredited University
Eligible for registration with the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (C.A.O.T.)Member of the College of Occupational Therapy3 to 5 years of previous experience in a similar role in a hospital settingSupervisory/management skillsDemonstrated excellent organization and problem solving skillsAble to function independently in a consultative roleExperience in working as part of a Multidisciplinary TeamCritical thinking abilityExemplary communication and facilitator skillsPHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORKING CONDITIONS
Able to work in an active, rapidly changing stressful environment with multiple demandsAbility to make decisions and prioritize effectively; must have sufficient physical endurance including manual dexterity to handle patients and equipment effectively and safelyEMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
