We are looking for a Semiconductor Process Engineer (Post Processing) to support our Canadian Photonics Research Centre. The Engineer would be someone who shares our core values of Integrity, Excellence, Respect and Creativity.
As the Semiconductor Process Engineer (Post-Processing), you will take full ownership of the final production stage, transforming III–V wafers into high-performance, market-ready photonic devices. You are responsible for the entire back-end lifecycle—from precision cleaving and facet coating to final testing—ensuring every die meets the exacting standards of our global clients known as Known Good Die (KGD). This is not just a tool-based role;
it is a high-impact position where you will drive process improvements and solving complex integration challenges to ensure our technology moves successfully from the fab to the real world.
The Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (CPFC) provides state-of-the-art photonics fabrication services that includes simulation, design, fabrication, testing, and prototyping of III-V semiconductor devices. CPFC enable Canadian and international clients to transition advanced photonic and electronic technologies to market and supports NRC programs such as NRC’s Advanced Photonic Components.
Screening criteriaApplicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
EducationBachelor’s degree in the Physical, Electrical, or Materials Sciences or equivalent engineering disciplines.
- Extensive experience in industrial semiconductor R&D or fabrication environments, with emphasis on back-end processing, device preparation, inspection, and testing of III–V photonic devices.
- Extensive experience in back-end wafer processing: cleaving, singulation, bar/die handling, facet coating, inspection, and optical/electrical testing.
- Extensive experience in back-end process integration, encompassing bar/die preparation, facet coating readiness, and testing workflows for photonic devices.
- Significant experience in commissioning deposition, inspection, and automated testing tools.
- Significant experience implementing SPC, DOE, and data analysis.
* Extensive experience is defined as a minimum of seven (7) years of experience.
** Significant experience is defined as two (2) to six (6) years of experience.
Reliability Status
For a Reliability Status, verification of background information over a period of 5 years is required.
Must qualify to work in a controlled goods zone. Training will be provided.
Must be able to stand for extended periods and perform light manual tasks in a controlled environment.
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
- Advanced understanding of back-end processes for III–V photonic devices, including cleaving, singulation, bar/die handling, and facet preparation.
- Solid understanding of facet coating principles and dielectric thin-film behavior, including reflectivity control, thickness accuracy, uniformity, and defectivity mechanisms.
- Advanced understanding of optical and electrical test methods for photonic devices, including LIV characterization, spectral measurements, and near/far-field inspection.
- Solid understanding of automated inspection and metrology systems used for bar/die quality assessment, defect detection, and process…
