The Opportunity

Blu Metric is looking for a dependable,-focused, and energetic Senior Hydrogeologist or Environmental Engineer to strengthen our multidisciplinary team in Ottawa. We are seeking someone with strong technical expertise and excellent people skills who can oversee, plan, and execute hydrogeological and terrain analysis studies for various clients such as land planners, developers (including rural lot subdivisions, severance projects, private servicing, PTTW applications), landfill operators, commercial and industrial interests (e.g., pits and quarries), and municipalities.

The role also involves conducting peer reviews of hydrogeological studies and contributing as part of multi‑disciplinary groups conducting Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), site characterizations, and site remediation. Responsibilities include developing proposals and budgets, managing projects, leading work teams, and drafting as well as reviewing high‑quality technical reports. Additionally, the successful candidate will mentor junior and intermediate colleagues and actively participate in business development efforts.

Key Job Responsibilities
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary project team, both in the field and office settings, to achieve hydrogeological and environmental objectives across industrial, commercial, and residential sites.
  • Design, supervise, and implement hydrogeological and/or ESA field programs, including drilling borings, installing supply and observation wells, conducting soil, surface water and groundwater sampling, and administering pumping tests for diverse projects such as dewatering (quarrying, construction, mining), municipal and private water supply development, environmental impact assessments (landfills, industrial sites, mines), and site investigations.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior hydrogeological and engineering staff throughout ongoing assignments.
  • Identify potential hazards and ensure compliance with stringent occupational health and safety protocols.
  • Coordinate with project stakeholders and oversee the integration and analysis of hydrogeological data and conceptual site models.
  • Manage and coordinate projects ranging from small‑scale initiatives to large, complex undertakings.
  • Draft and review high‑quality technical reports primarily in English, with French proficiency considered an asset.
  • Develop proposals for services, participate actively in local business development activities, and maintain effective communication with clients, governmental agencies, and other relevant stakeholders.
Qualifications, Education, and Skills
  • The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Earth Sciences, Geological, Civil or Environmental Engineering. A Master’s degree in hydrogeology would be an asset.
  • A minimum of 10+ years of relevant experience supporting hydrogeological, ESA and remediation projects for industrial, private, mining and/or government clients.
  • Experience in environmental site assessments (Phase I, II) and remediation of soils and groundwater and Record of Site Condition (RSC) filing under Ontario Regulation 153/04.
  • Qualified Person (QP) for Excess Soils under Ontario Regulation 406/19. Experience in the preparation of soil and groundwater management plans and excess soil destination assessment reports (ESDAR).
  • Knowledge of geology, physical and chemical hydrogeology, environmental site assessments, contaminated site delineation and remediation.
  • Experience should include groundwater and surface water monitoring and sampling procedures, drilling and installation of observation wells, taking sampling notes, preparing borehole logs, and conducting and analyzing permeability and pumping tests.
  • Familiarity with current Ontario environmental regulations and guidelines related to waste management, air, groundwater, surface water, soils and/or sediment, excess soils management and well water supply.
  • Demonstrated experience in technical oversight/peer review, staff mentoring/development and other leadership abilities will be considered an asset for this position.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
