Ottawa is built on un-ceded Algonquin Anishinabek territory. The peoples of the Algonquin Anishinabek Nation have lived on this territory for millennia and we honour them and this land. Their culture and presence have nurtured and continue to nurture this land. CHEO also honours all First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples and their valuable past and present contributions to this land.

CHEO is one of the few stand‑alone, global leaders in pediatric health and is home to more than 6,500 staff, clinicians, scientists and researchers, as well as volunteers – all of whom work together to help children and youth achieve their best lives. Within its own walls and through partnerships with community providers, CHEO has transformed from a 20th‑century acute care hospital into a 21st‑century integrated child and youth health system.

Ranked in the top 1% of Canadian hospitals for the digitization of its clinical infrastructure, CHEO combines excellence in clinical care, research, and education to advance seamless care that’s provided where, when, and how it is needed.

Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse Practitioner (NP) at CHEO is a nurse in an advanced nursing practice position with additional educational preparation from an accredited NP program and who has clinical expertise in a pediatric nursing subspecialty. The NP integrates the skills and knowledge from nursing and medicine within a broad framework of advanced nursing practice. The NP functions both autonomously and in collaboration with physicians and other health‑care providers to manage, in a comprehensive manner, the health‑care needs of an assigned number of perioperative patients.

In this NP role, the individual will be working within the acute pain service providing clinical care to patients and families receiving pain modalities such as NCA, PCA, epidural analgesia, nerve blocks and infusions that may be opioid sparing such as Ketamine and Lidocaine. The NP will function both autonomously and in collaboration with Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, Allied Health and other health‑care providers to manage pain and symptoms both as an in‑patient and outpatient.

The NP will perform physical assessments and health histories, interpret lab and diagnostic results. The NP will develop and implement patient and family education tools and clinical pathways that will optimize pain management. Policies will need to be developed/updated in response to evidence‑based practices. They will develop initiatives to meet the needs of patients’ populations in order to reduce length of stay and coordinate and repatriate patient populations (neurosurgical population as an example).

Note:

this position includes cross covering for the NPs working within the Perioperative Services.
