Under the direction of the Director of Care (D.O.C) or Registered Practical Nurse (R.P.N.) provides nursing services to residents and supervises non-registered staff. As a member of the Care Team assists in the development and implementation of resident care plans and regularly assesses individual clinical status. Actively participates in the meetings and committees of the Nursing Department to ensure the provision of optimal standards of nursing care.

- Dispenses medication to residents as prescribed by physicians and in accordance with accepted professional practice.
- Provides di r ect care to residents as required .
- Gives treatment in accordance with accepted practice.
- Regularly assesses the status of each resident and communicates current status to the R.N. and/or physician.
- Assists the D.O.C./R.N. in maintaining the policies and standards of the Home.
- Prepares shift assignments for nursing staff and directly supervises nursing staff in the performance of their duties.
- Maintains medical records in accordance with acceptable standards.
- Records any change in resident status, in Point Click Care utilizing acceptable professional language and format.
- Prepares an end-of-shift report describing resident status, incidents, medical orders, and any other information necessary to ensure continuity of care and intra-shift communications.
- Maintains the nursing station in acceptable order.
- Ensures the privacy, dignity and confidentiality of the residents and the Home.
- Check and co- signs physician’s orders daily as necessary including quarterly reviews.
- Maintains knowledge of and familiarity with all nursing policies and procedures utilized in the Home as well as all relevant administrative policies and procedures.
- Assists the RAI Coordinator in developing and implementing individual care programs and supervises these programs daily.
- Ensures the safety and security of the facility during the shift and communicates problems to the appropriate person .
- Demonstrates willingness to co-operate with colleagues, subordinates, and members of other departments.
- Demonstrates consideration towards residents, visitors, and volunteers.
- Participates in in-services and continuing education, maintaining personal professional skills.
- Attends/reviews core competency in-services as required by legislation.
- Ensures a safe and healthy environment for staff and residents. Helps prevent the spread of infections to residents, staff, visiting family members and the community.
- Ensure each resident’s monthly weight and blood pressure are taken and documented.
- Participates in RAI/MDS practice requirements.
- Performs any other responsibilities necessary for the provision of high-quality nursing care and the smooth operation of the Home.
- Post-secondary education or equivalent combination of training, education, and experience.
- Certificate of competency issued by the College of Nurses of Ontario .
- Five or more years of relevant work experience in a hospital and/or long-term care environment .
- Patience and demeaner to work with elderly and vulnerable persons.
- Demonstrated clinical assessment skills .
- General computer skills, able to access and enter medical information into Electronic Medical Records system.
- Good command of the English language ( r ead, write, speak) . Demonstrates ability to interpret verbal and written communications and instruction.
- Appears clean, neat, well groomed, and properly attired according to the dress code for the department.
- Constant standing, walking, bending, and twisting while administering medications and providing care.
- Reaching and carrying medication and supplies.
- Pushing and pulling medication and treatment carts.
- Gripping and grasping medical equipment.
- Occasional lifting ( up to 20 lbs ) when assisting with direct care.
