Rehabilitation Engineering Technician

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Rehabilitation Engineering Technician to provide hands‑on technical support to the Oxfordshire Wheelchair Service and the Specialist Disability Service at the Oxford Centre for Enablement.

Main duties of the job
  • Manufacture custom contour seating and wheelchair accessories in milled foam and Lynx sheet using engineers' drawings or instructions.
  • Produce parts and components for stock and maintain local component stock.
  • Assist the Rehabilitation Engineering team in clinics with technical work, equipment setup, and transport.
  • Operate the CNC machine (including foam block setup, toolpath checks, and post‑processing).
    Contribute to equipment maintenance and servicing.
  • Maintain accurate technical files and patient records; document work completed.
  • Use a range of hand and power tools and mechanical workshop equipment independently.
  • Produce patterns for upholstery work and communicate technical details with external companies.
  • Monitor and maintain stock levels in workshop areas, liaising with store staff and suppliers.
  • Source suppliers for parts and components as needed.
  • Attend and contribute to in‑service training sessions.
  • Perform occasional work in awkward positions and expose to noise and dust in the workshop environment.
  • Complete drawings in CAD Fusion 360.

Person Specification Qualifications
  • Grade C or above in English and Maths GCSEs
  • NVQ Level 2 Mechanical Engineering or equivalent practical engineering training
  • Mechanical Engineering qualification (e.g., BTEC Level 2 Mechanical Engineering)
Experience
  • Skilled use of mechanical workshop equipment and hand‑held power tools independently
  • Practical problem‑solving approach
  • Proven ability to manufacture or assemble components to tight deadlines
  • Experience working with people with disabilities and understanding of disability issues
  • Competent in the manufacture of foam and Lynx seating systems
  • Knowledge of wheelchairs and seating components
Personal Skills
  • Self‑motivated and able to work independently on own initiative
  • Willing to learn new skills
  • Methodical, thorough, and self‑organised approach to work
  • Able to work under pressure and follow instructions from other team members
