Position: Ward Sister/ Charge Nurse

Job Overview

The successful post holder will work closely with the UGI Matron, our medical team and all health care professionals. The role requires clinical leadership to the nursing staff, ensuring efficient nursing service and high standard of patient care. The ward sister will be an experienced, knowledgeable clinical leader, acting as a role model, promoting and monitoring safe and effective practice, and working with the Matron and Operational Service Manager to develop processes that enhance the patient experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the multi‑professional team to develop a shared vision of the service.
  • Act as a role model and resource in expert, evidence‑based clinical practice.
  • Develop effective documentation, pathways, protocols and guidelines for care.
  • Lead continuous improvement of patient care and the ward team.
  • Manage ward budget, applying detailed understanding of budgetary constraints.
  • Initiate and implement service and practice development, improving practice and health outcomes.
  • Participate in selection, interviewing, appraisal and professional development of team members.
  • Ensure clinical competence of all ward team members.
  • Maintain annual appraisal and personal development plans for all team members.
  • Ensure statutory and mandatory training is maintained by all ward team members.
  • Contribute to multidisciplinary meetings and local bodies/forums to develop practice and service.
  • Manage staff sickness, absence or performance, liaising with HR and occupational health as necessary.
Qualifications
  • Current first level RN registration with the NMC.
  • Degree in Nursing.
  • Evidence of change management.
  • Specialist knowledge and competency in the specialty on the unit.
  • Acute setting experience at management level.
  • Facilitating and Assessing Workplace Learning module or equivalent.
  • Continuing professional development.
  • Leadership developmental course.
  • Degree level education.
Desirable Criteria
  • Post‑registration qualification or training in the speciality.
  • Experience in rostering.
  • Education at Masters level, if willing to take on education.

This role involves access to vulnerable people; a Disclosure and Barring Service check is required. Applicants must have appropriate UK professional registration. The position is funded by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
