Job Description

Job Description: The Captor-E Mk0 Radar is produced for the Eurofighter Typhoon and currently in operation with multiple export customers. The project is progressing at pace through continuous systems and software design upgrades, to enable the product to continue to meet the needs of end-users who operate in challenging environments.

There is a need for Systems Engineers to work on Radar Mode development within the Mk0 Systems Engineering Team. A core element of the role is the development of algorithms for the Signal Processor, and alongside this the successful applicant will also be expected to take on a broad involvement in all aspects of radar operation and processing, as well as to support analysis, design, integration, trials and verification activities within the Captor-E Mk0 team.

There will be the opportunity to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including hardware and software teams, test teams, international partner organisations as well as customer stakeholders.

Role Objectives
  • To support and where appropriate lead the development of radar modes in a maturing product (Captor-E Mk0), to ensure that these meet the formal requirements and fitness for purpose in an operational environment.
  • To take a full system approach to this work and assist all aspects of the radar development.
What you’ll do

There is a large element in the role focused around using full mode model replay of trials data, to characterise performance and develop improvements. From this work, the engineer will provide design documentation updates and other support to allow implementation of changes in software.

  • Become the point of contact for specific radar mode(s), primarily air-air but potentially air-surface too.
  • Create a route map of development work for the relevant radar mode(s)
  • Carry out the full range of activities associated with radar mode design and verification / validation.
  • Perform analysis on trials data (ground rig and flight trials) associated with radar modes.
  • Develop solutions to problems and capability gaps.
  • Present analysis results and proposed design updates to stakeholders
  • Contribute to planning of trials activity (ground rig and flight trials)
  • Contribute to configuration and maintenance of models and analysis tools, along with supporting documentation.
What you’ll bring

On top of an Engineering/Physics/Applied Maths or equivalent background and ideally some Radar Systems Engineering experience, the successful candidate(s) will be expected to either have existing abilities in the following areas or show a clear drive and ability to develop them.

  • Possess a good knowledge of radar principles and associated processing techniques, particularly of signal processing and associated detection theory.
  • Be able to provide a focus on signal processing, but with a good understanding of other aspects of the system including radar control and tracking, and how these interact.
  • Know how to build and maintain complex systems models and analysis tools.
  • Demonstrate the skills to perform data analysis of large data sets, using automated processing where appropriate.
  • Possess good investigative and problem-solving skills.
  • Show ability to present analysis results and design change proposals in a clear manner, at appropriate technical levels for different internal and external stakeholders.
Security Clearance

This role is subject to pre-employment screening in line with the UK Government’s Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). An additional range of Personnel Security Controls referred to as National Security Vetting (NSV) may apply, this could include meeting the eligibility requirements for The Security Check (SC) or Developed Vetting (DV).
