As we chart our course to a net‑zero world, the way society uses energy is changing. New innovative solutions such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, heat pumps, community energy and energy storage are being deployed at scale, altering the nature and volume of energy flowing through our electrical networks. This dramatically changes the detail and complexity of the network planning and management we require.

We are responding by driving modernisation of our processes through innovation and digitalisation.

Our System Planning team is at the cutting edge of this, building new skills and capabilities to meet the challenge. They work with digital network models and tools to identify and anticipate constraints while utilising digital twins, demand flexibility, monitoring and analytics to inform the investment programmes needed. In this role you will lead on key enablers of Net Zero while ensuring safety, security of supply and network performance meet statutory, regulatory and licence requirements in the most economic, efficient and coordinated manner.

Responsibilities
  • Carry out a wide range of power system studies and manage our CAPEX investment programme to guarantee that our electricity network remains compliant with technical and regulatory requirements of our licence.
  • Analyse the capability of our networks to accommodate both demand and generation connections.
  • Work closely with design and delivery teams to ensure capital and connection projects are designed and delivered efficiently and in a coordinated manner.
  • Support the planning standards workforce and embed any developments into day‑to‑day planning functions.
  • Specify innovative solutions and integrate learnings from high‑profile low‑carbon innovation projects into our day‑to‑day planning function.
Qualifications
  • Minimum HNC educational qualification in Electrical Engineering with relevant industry experience, or an engineering degree working towards Chartered Engineer status.
  • Fundamental knowledge of planning, design, operation, protection and control of electricity networks and the interface with Transmission.
  • Knowledge of statutory, regulatory & licence requirements and industry‑wide codes and engineering standards (e.g., P2/8, P28, G5/5, G74, G98, G99, G100).
  • Experience using Power System Analysis software such as Power Factory, PSSE or willingness to learn new systems. Knowledge of Python is an advantage.
  • Commercial awareness and passion for developing innovative solutions.
