As a steel erector, you will create the ‘skeleton’ frameworks for construction projects of all shapes and sizes.
- Review technical plans drawn by architects and engineers.
- Plan project assembly.
- Cut and shape steel.
- Operate hand and power tools.
- Install and fix steel girders, pipework and beam sections to make a steel framework.
- Use elevated work platforms and scissor lifts.
- Lay metal decking.
- Fix safety netting and edge rails.
- Lifting and guiding components into position with tower cranes.
- Lining up and levelling steelwork before bolting it in place.
- Work on-site, often at height.
While there are no formal qualifications needed, you can pursue a career through college courses, apprenticeship, or direct application to an employer. Many employers are interested in enthusiastic, willing‑to‑learn individuals who can follow instructions.
College / Training ProviderAchieving GCSE qualifications (or equivalent) in Maths and English is beneficial. You could study for a Level 1 Certificate in Construction Skills or a Level 2 Award in Skills for Engineering to improve your abilities and job prospects.

An apprenticeship with a construction company is a good way into the industry. Open to anyone over 16, you’ll be employed and expected to work a minimum of 30 hours a week, split between on‑job experience and training.

Previous site experience is valuable; you may start as an assistant and progress with experience. Work experience can be gained at school, weekends, or holidays with a company or relative in the field.

The expected salary varies with experience.
- Newly trained steel erectors can start at £28,000.
- Trained with experience steel erectors can earn up to £71,000 (subject to location, employer, responsibility level, overtime, and training route).
