Overview

Highways maintenance technicians are responsible for maintaining local roads and streets, ensuring that repair requests are addressed and highways and footways remain safe and well maintained.

Responsibilities
  • Design highways maintenance schemes, covering resurfacing, drainage repairs, and improvements to roads and footpaths.
  • Inspect roads to identify structural defects and safety issues.
  • Calculate costs of maintenance and analyse environmental impacts.
  • Investigate and action maintenance requests submitted by the public.
  • Oversee practical maintenance of roads and streets and direct traffic during repair operations.
  • Operate, maintain, and transport construction equipment and supplies.
  • Maintain road networks during winter and on highways, including painting traffic control lines.
  • Perform roadside landscaping such as clearing weeds and trimming trees.
  • Sweep debris, spread sand, asphalt, gravel, and clay to build and maintain surfaces.
  • Clean and repair drainage systems, bridges, tunnels and other structures.
  • Install and repair guardrails, road lighting, and other road features.
  • Develop technical drawings and specifications using CAD technology.
  • Write risk assessments for maintenance projects.
How to Become a Highways Maintenance Technician

While no formal qualifications are required, you can pursue the role through one of the following routes:

  • Complete a college course or apprenticeship in construction or civil engineering.
  • Apply directly to an employer for on‑the‑job training.
  • Obtain a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card if you will work on a construction site.

GCSE qualifications in Maths and English are advisable, and completing Level 1 or Level 2 construction qualifications can improve your prospects.

  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in using and maintaining machines and tools.
  • Excellent communication and listening skills.
  • Full awareness of health and safety requirements.
Qualifications / Training Options
  • Level 2 NVQ in Construction and Civil Engineering Operations.
  • Level 2 Highways Maintenance Skilled Operative Apprenticeship.
  • Level 3 Highways Electrician or Service Operative Apprenticeship.
  • SVQ in Construction Civil Engineering (Road building and Maintenance) at SCQF Level 5.
  • Level 2 Construction related qualification followed by further progress.
  • Modern Apprenticeship in Construction Technical at SCQF Level 6.
  • Level 2 NVQ – Road Building and Maintenance (Construction);
    Excavation and Reinstatement.
  • Level 2 Apprenticeship in Highways Maintenance.
Salary
  • Newly trained technicians: £21,000 per annum.
  • Experienced technicians: up to £42,000 per annum, depending on location, responsibilities and overtime.
