What does a technical coordinator do?

As a technical coordinator, you’ll support construction projects from a technical point of view. Your day‑to‑day tasks include drawing up and interpreting plans, diagrams and schedules, coordinating paperwork, and dealing with enquiries.

Responsibilities
  • Dealing with public and staff enquiries and feedback
  • Liaising with clients to understand their needs and report on progress
  • Assisting technical managers to create and share work plans and timelines
  • Managing technical project documentation
  • Carrying out administrative tasks
  • Preparing presentations and project updates
  • Reviewing project costs and forecasts
How to become a technical coordinator
  • University – Complete an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject (e.g., Building studies, Civil engineering, Construction site management, Estimating, Surveying).
  • College/Training – Study construction or a related trade; may need to gain on‑site experience or complete further qualifications.
  • Apprenticeship – Start as an apprentice in most construction trades and apply for a higher apprenticeship in construction management; fully employed, 30+ hrs/week, split between on‑job experience and training.
  • Work Experience – Gain prior experience in construction; may start as an assistant to a technical coordinator and progress as skills develop.

  • Newly trained technical coordinators can start at £28,000
  • Trained with experience technical coordinators can earn up to £62,000*

Salary depends on location, employer, level of responsibility, any overtime and whether you have completed an industry recognised training route.
