The post is a 6 month fixed term contract in Colorectal/ General Surgery covering sabbatical (May - Oct 2026).

Main duties of the job

As a Colorectal Surgeon, you will have a range of responsibilities, including:

  • Full clinical responsibility for colorectal and general surgical patients.
  • Promoting the further development of colorectal surgical services.
  • Supporting the development of clinical governance and using audit findings to enhance the quality of treatment and minimize clinical risk.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to achieve the collective goals of the department.
  • Developing innovative working practices and supporting the growing clinical contributions of non-medical staff.
  • Supervising and managing junior medical staff.
  • Assisting in the teaching and training of junior staff and contributing to postgraduate medical education.
  • Work with the Clinical Directorate management team to ensure that national targets and quality standards are met.

On-Call

The on call commitment is 1 in 10. No elective activity is undertaken whilst on call or for the post take ward round the following morning.

  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register
  • Post Graduate thesis
Leadership/Management Skills
  • Interest in research and service development
Academic Achievements (including research and publications)
  • Publication of post graduate articles in peer reviewed journal
  • Experience of NIHR Portfolio trials
Teaching and Training
  • Experience in training Resident doctors
Knowledge/Skills/Clinical Expertise
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical management of Emergency General Surgery patients
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical management of Colorectal patients
  • Able to offer expert advice on the management of Colorectal problems
