We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic Consultant to join the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Department with an interest in Oncology/ Head and Neck Cancer. The unit provides Oral & Maxillofacial service, Oral Surgery, and Restorative dentistry, and houses a Day Case GA / LA operative theatre. The department has access to a Cone Beam CT scanner and offers scope to further develop the services provided.
Within the department, new and follow‑up clinics and minor operations are performed under local and general anaesthesia, with treatment also provided under general anaesthesia for both day case and inpatient care. The department enjoys good working relationships with other surgical services and works in partnership with the local Major Trauma Centre at Cambridge University Hospital (CUH) to deliver out‑of‑hours cover.
A centralised oncology service is provided for the region from CUH. The department places a strong emphasis on the training of DCTs and SAS, as well as providing teaching to regional DCTs and local General Dental Practitioners.
- Provide a comprehensive acute and elective OMFS service.
- Support sub‑specialist interests in the management of skin cancer and OMFS trauma.
- Contribute to the skin MDT in conjunction with Plastic Surgery, Dermatology, and Histopathology.
- Deliver outpatient clinics, elective inpatient and day‑case surgery in Peterborough City Hospital.
- Provide urgent and emergency care duties, including out‑of‑hours on‑call work within working time regulations and safe working provisions.
- Participate in teaching, training and audit, and supervise core trainees and SAS clinicians.
- Provide advice and support to the clinical team and peers in leadership situations, inspiring confidence, motivation and teamwork.
- Work within an on‑call rota shared with the Cambridge University Hospital Maxillofacial Surgery unit on a 1:10 rota.
- May be required to work off site; vehicle access required.
- Full GMC and GDC registration.
- Entry on to the GMC/GDC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview) or CESR/European Community Rights.
- Appropriate higher Oral & Maxillofacial surgical qualification.
- Knowledge of the principles of research with evidence of recent involvement in research.
- ALS and ATLS certification.
- Compliance with all mandatory training.
- Participation in management activity SpR Management course.
- Publications in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Ability to fulfil all elements of the job description.
- Specialist knowledge of oral diseases and their management.
- Competence in operative surgery and management of trauma.
- Practical knowledge and proven experience in caring for acutely ill patients.
- Ability to develop the service.
- Demonstrated interest and commitment to teaching.
- Experience in supervising and training junior doctors.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships at all levels.
- Understanding of Clinical Governance and its responsibilities.
- Evidence of initiating, conducting and organising clinical audit projects.
- Knowledge of multidisciplinary audit principles and evidence of direct involvement.

- Ability to contribute to the strategic development of the Trust.
- Broad experience in all aspects of oral & maxillo‑facial surgery.
- Proven interest and experience in Head & Neck surgery, including facial deformity.
- Experience in surgical dermatology.

- Appreciation of and evidence of training in human factors.
