Environmental Permitting and Compliance Job Description
We are looking for a Consultant to Senior Consultant to assist in the delivery of environmental permit applications, associated studies, and compliance activities within the regulated industry sector in the UK. The team works across a wide variety of industries including energy (nuclear, oil and gas, hydrogen), waste, food and drink, chemicals, and manufacturing. Our work involves environmental permits (for operation) and compliance projects, covering:
- Obtaining environmental permits for industrial facilities
- Managing variations, transfers, and surrenders of existing permits
- Handling permit applications for water discharge activities, flood risk activities, and trade effluent consents
These projects range from smaller, localized sites to large-scale national infrastructure projects, including clients with over 50 operating sites.
ResponsibilitiesThe role involves supporting clients with complete environmental permit applications, the development of standalone studies and technical reports, and ensuring ongoing compliance with regulatory requirements and permit conditions. Key areas of support include:
- Reviewing site sensitivities and identifying environmental constraints (e.g., sensitive receptors)
- Conducting Environmental Risk Assessments, considering emissions to air, water, land, groundwater, and sewer
- Performing quantitative screening assessments of point source emissions and collaborating with specialists in acoustics and air quality for detailed modeling
- Compiling, reviewing, and summarizing environmental monitoring reports and pollution inventories
- Drafting chapters on energy use, raw materials, water use, waste management, operational efficiencies, and identifying opportunities for improvement
- Applying and reviewing Best Available Techniques (BAT) across different sectors
- Developing or updating Accident Management Plans and Contingency Plans
- Preparing Fire Prevention, Odour Management, and Noise Management Plans
- Supporting Environmental Management Systems development and compliance
- Reviewing Site Condition Reports, including soil and groundwater monitoring data, sources-pathways-receptors, and containment measures
- Conducting BAT options appraisals for emission reduction technologies
- Auditing clients’ activities to ensure compliance with permits and other regulatory requirements
- Interpreting regulatory requirements from EU Directives, UK legislation, and Regulator guidance
- Leading regulator liaison and consultation with stakeholders
The successful candidate should have experience in environmental permitting and compliance within regulated industries, and demonstrate strong analytical, communication, and technical skills in the following areas.
