Epic Business Intelligence Developer (BID)
Location: Remote
Role SummaryThe Epic Business Intelligence Developer builds and maintains reporting and analytics on Epic data for our client. The role connects Epic's reporting layers (Clarity, Caboodle, Cogito) with the enterprise data platform on Databricks/AWS, supporting clinical, operational, and AI-driven analytics, including our clients Chat's "Ask the Data" capability. Owns requirements from stakeholder intake through delivery, and works closely with data engineering, clinical informatics, and Epic application teams.
Key Responsibilities- Write and optimize SQL against Epic Clarity and Caboodle to deliver clinical, operational, and financial reporting.
- Build and extend Caboodle data model components, including custom DMCs and SSIS/ETL packages.
- Develop Epic-native analytics:
Radar dashboards, Slicer Dicer data models, Reporting Workbench templates, and Cogito metrics. - Design and support data feeds from Clarity/Caboodle into Databricks and AWS, partnering with data engineering on mappings and data quality.
- Determine the appropriate platform for each analytics need — evaluating requirements and strategically deciding whether to build within Epic's native reporting tools (Radar, Slicer Dicer, Reporting Workbench, Cogito) when that is the right fit, or to leverage the broader enterprise data platform (Databricks/AWS) when Epic is not well-suited to the need — and clearly articulate the rationale for that choice to stakeholders and technical partners.
- Lead requirements gathering with clinical, operational, and business stakeholders: run discovery sessions, document reporting and data requirements, define metrics and acceptance criteria, and validate deliverables with end users.
- Support AI and natural-language analytics use cases by curating trusted, governed datasets and semantic definitions.
- Partner with Epic application analysts on build changes that affect downstream reporting, and on Epic upgrades.
- Follow PHI, security, and data governance standards in all deliverables.
- Active Epic certification as a Business Intelligence Developer, or current Clarity Data Model and Caboodle Data Model certifications.
- 4+ years of hands-on Epic reporting and analytics development in a health system or Epic partner setting.
- Advanced SQL (T-SQL) and strong working knowledge of the Clarity and Caboodle data models.
- Experience building Radar, Slicer Dicer, and Reporting Workbench content.
- Experience working with PHI under HIPAA controls.
- Proven experience gathering and documenting requirements directly with clinical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate reporting and analytics requirements and make sound, strategic decisions about the right tool or platform for the job — determining when to use Epic's native reporting capabilities versus when to route the work to the broader data platform (Databricks/AWS).
- Pediatric or academic medical center experience.
- Experience with Databricks, Spark SQL, or AWS data services; familiarity with Fivetran or similar ingestion tools.
- Exposure to Epic Cosmos, Epic Nebula/cloud analytics, or FHIR-based data access.
- Experience supporting multi-entity Epic environments or post-merger data consolidation.
- Familiarity with revenue cycle data (Resolute, charge master) in addition to clinical data.
