Job Description

Do you want to make a lasting positive change to the environment? As a Technical Author in the UK BAT team you can.

Large slaughterhouses and animal by‑products installations are required to use ‘Best Available Techniques’ (BAT) to reduce emissions to air, water and land. The UK BAT author defines BAT within the UK in a transparent, collaborative, data‑led process that safeguards environmental protection.

Responsibilities
  • Draft BAT Conclusions.
  • Liaise with Technical Working Groups.
  • Present final documents suitable for publication as a new, UK‑wide environmental standard.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across government, industry, and advisory bodies.
  • Use smart tools to stay connected; travel and overnight stays may be required.
Qualifications and Skills
  • Specialist knowledge and understanding of the slaughterhouse and animal by‑products industry.
  • Good understanding of process engineering, environmental issues and legislation in the UK.
  • Capability of critically analysing technical arguments and data.
  • Strong technical writing skills.
  • Project management skills and a drive to complete tasks.
  • Experience of at least 5 years in environmental regulation and the SA industry.
  • Skilled at collection and technical analysis of complex industrial data.
  • Verbal and written communication, building relationships, planning, prioritising and organising tasks.
  • Ability to respond flexibly to challenges and build consensus.

Contract and Working Arrangements
  • Up to 2 years from appointment – Full‑time.
  • Inclusive workforce – flexible working patterns, job share allowed.
  • Travel may be required.
