Part of the Volker Wessels UK Group, Volker Stevin is an industry‑leading civil engineering business providing complex and innovative engineering solutions across a wide range of sectors including maritime, flood risk management, defence, energy, water and regeneration.
This is an exciting long‑term opportunity in Plymouth for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support the commercial department of a Tier 1 civil engineering business.
Responsibilities- GENERAL: Assist the procurement process to maximise profit and ensure subcontract orders are placed on time and in accordance with company policy; be aware of contractual requirements; act in the business’s best commercial interests; act professionally; work with and develop the trainee surveyor on the project if applicable.
- TENDER: Assist the bid team as required.
- PRE-CONSTRUCTION: Understand the project, tender offer, and review tender documents; understand tender book allowances, risk and scopes; assist in establishing the first profit and loss forecast.
- CONSTRUCTION: (details omitted as not present).
- PROJECT TEAM: Ensure awareness of roles and responsibilities; help maximise staff morale; communicate between all members of staff; attend regular internal meetings and ensure actions are closed out quickly.
- SUBCONTRACT MANAGEMENT: Prepare subcontract documentation; assist accurate measurement of subcontractors’ works; keep records and validate legitimacy of account records; prepare subcontract payment notices for approval per LDEDC; assist in subcontractor appraisal; produce subcontract payments on approval basis; assist in compiling specific subcontractor liabilities and accruals.
- OTHER: Be aware of and report potential business development opportunities; support site team in general commercial awareness.
- Required Qualifications / Expertise: Undertaking an accredited course by RICS, CIOB or ICES.
- Alternatively, a degree with numerical or technical components is advantageous. Relevant HND subjects include building/construction, urban and land studies, civil engineering and structural engineering.
Degree in QS and relevant experience obtained.
