Programme OverviewThe Higher Level Engineering Apprenticeship at Babcock is an exciting 3.5-year program that offers training in one of three engineering disciplines:
Mechanical, Electrical or Naval Architecture.
Throughout the program you will create or update technical documentation, reports, or specifications covering quality, reliability, production schedules, costing, design, manufacturing, testing, maintenance, transport, commissioning or decommissioning. The role is predominantly office-based with occasional site visits.
As part of the interview you will select first and second preferred engineering disciplines and explain your reasons.
Specialisms- Naval Architecture: Analyse and design floating vessels and structures, from nuclear submarines to floating work platforms, ensuring safety, seaworthiness and cost-effectiveness. Prepare design plans using computer software, and check and test specifications via simulations and 3D models.
- Electrical: Draw up project plans and circuit diagrams using computer-assisted engineering software, estimate costs and timelines, coordinate technicians, and participate in test installations and data analysis.
- Mechanical: Apply principles of mechanics, thermodynamics and fluid dynamics to design and analyse mechanical systems. Use CAD software to create detailed models and simulations, and engage in hands-on problem-solving exercises.
- Data analysis and interpretation – extract, analyse and interpret engineering and manufacturing data to draw accurate conclusions.
- Project management – use tools for effective decision-making and risk assessment.
- Problem-solving – apply techniques such as Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to identify root causes and improve quality.
- Lean tools and techniques – use Six Sigma and 8 Wastes to drive efficiency and minimise waste.
- Computer-based software systems – employ CAD, data analytics and databases.
- Documentation control – ensure compliance with quality standards through proper documentation processes.
- Financial planning – conduct budgeting, estimating, cost control and forecasting.
- Communication and stakeholder management – communicate findings through presentations and reports.
