Job Summary

The Clinical Engineering department at Derriford Hospital is responsible for the reporting, management and maintenance of 44,000 medical devices. Clinical Engineering provides our Trust and other customers with medical device leadership, expertise and governance for the whole life cycle of their devices, through proactive and responsive teams.

Job Description

Support the Mechanical Services Team by performing commissioning, decommissioning, decontamination, booking in, returning and collecting medical devices/equipment. Assist existing Technicians, Technical Inspectors and Engineers, developing skills in a progressive role. Engage in the Clinical Engineering training scheme including the Healthcare Engineering Specialist Technician Level 3 Course under the Government's apprenticeship scheme.

Main duties
  • Work under supervision and as directed by Team Leader/Training Supervisor.
  • Engage with the Clinical Engineering training scheme at the appropriate level when required.
  • Assist with fulfilling mechanical team workload objectives and provide assistance to all Clinical Engineering teams. Equipment types include wheelchairs, electrical and mechanical plinths, specialist patient trolleys, hospital beds and a range of electro‑mechanical devices.
  • Build a baseline of equipment and process competencies.
  • Perform corrective and planned preventive maintenance on medical devices following written instructions.
  • Perform acceptance, performance and safety checks on new equipment.
  • Record repairs and services in the Trust's Medical Devices Database in accordance with the Quality System.
  • Support continual improvement of Clinical Engineering processes through participation in Quality System audits and act as an auditor when required.
Job Responsibilities
  • Accept and prioritize requests for medical device repair and service.
  • Log corrections and preventive maintenance in the Medical Devices Database.
  • Perform safety testing (BS EN 60601 & 62353) and acceptance testing (MHRA Standard).
  • Maintain service schedules, scientific and technical documentation.
  • Rotate through all Clinical Engineering Teams to broaden experience.
  • Maintain compliance with the Quality System and raise non‑compliance issues.
  • Order suitable spare parts and manage stock control.
  • Ensure personal and general test equipment calibration and tool responsibility.
  • Attend group meetings, team briefings, and provide assistance to colleagues and the Medical Equipment Library.
  • Keep workshop facilities orderly and safe, using compressed gases and high‑voltage equipment safely.
Person Specification Essential
  • At least 5 GCSE passes at grade C/4 or above, including English, Mathematics and Science.
  • Interest in mechanical/electro‑mechanical or electronic engineering.
  • Experience of team working and use of basic software packages (e‑learning, e‑mail).
  • Demonstrable interest in further education and personal development.
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and communicate effectively.
  • Physical accuracy with good hand and eye coordination for small parts work.
Desirable
  • Mechanical engineering experience.
  • ECDL or CLAIT qualification.
  • Full UK driving licence (manual) or working towards.
  • Experience in a customer service environment.
