2026 Telecoms Higher Apprentice – National Grid Electricity Distribution, Pontypridd

Join the National Grid team as a 2026 Telecoms Higher Apprentice and develop skills within the UK’s leading electricity distribution company.

About the Role

The apprenticeship will run for approximately four years, with a mix of on‑job and formal training at our Training Centre in Taunton and other appropriate institutions. You will work with local teams across the NGED service area, undertake placements at other locations, and travel as required.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, install, commission and support Telecommunications services across the NGED region, including Radio Communications for monitoring the Electricity Network, Mobile Radio for NGED vehicles and Data Communications between NGED offices.
• Assist senior personnel with day‑to‑day tasks in a fast‑paced, technology‑driven environment.
• Travel to other NGED sites for training and operational support.
• Maintain and troubleshoot telecoms equipment, ensuring reliable service delivery.
• Collaborate with external contractors and internal stakeholders to communicate solutions and build relationships.

Requirements & Qualifications

• At least 5 years’ UK residency for National Security Vetting clearance, or meet the alternative eligibility conditions.
• Two or more A‑Level grades A* – C in Mathematics, Physics, ICT, Computing, Design and Technology or equivalent Level 3/4 qualifications.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• Interest and passion for telecommunications technology.
• Willingness to undertake a basic DBS check.

Compensation & Benefits

Starting salary of £26,899, increasing as you progress:

• Year 2 – £35,817
• Year 3 – £43,491
• Year 4 – £47,197
• Apprenticeship completion – £53,379

Location & Working Hours

Applicants must live within approximately 45 minutes of Church Village, Pontypridd (CF38 1BN). The first 12 weeks of training have no annual leave.
