We design, build and service highly engineered products in fluid and motion control applications. Our five market sectors are Industrial Automation, Process Automation, Climate Control, Life Science and Fluid Control, and Transport.

Role Overview

As Manager of the Machine Shop team, you will represent a key role within Operations and Manufacturing. You will be responsible for a team of employees, ensuring a smooth workflow by leveraging labour and equipment effectively to produce high‑quality products on time while complying with health and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure all risk and COSHH assessments are in place, up‑to‑date, and communicated to relevant employees.
  • Contribute to strategic decisions such as budget planning and production improvement.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive Cap Ex plan.
  • Lead introduction of new products with Production Engineering, Machine Shop, and Design Engineering teams.
  • Supervise Production Engineers to practice continuous improvement of manufacturing methods.
  • Conduct daily shift team meetings and toolbox talks.
  • Analyze KPIs, communicate findings, and implement improvements.
  • Provide concise data for management meetings and reports.
  • Resolve cross‑functional issues with Project Managers, Procurement, Engineering, Sales, and Manufacturing Managers.
  • Co‑ordinate team activities to meet daily, weekly, and monthly targets.
  • Oversee onboarding, performance reviews, and training needs for all direct reports.
  • Handle employee relations, including absence management, disciplinary actions, and grievances.
  • Maintain training matrixes and ensure up‑to‑date training records.
  • Ensure effective use of resources and efficient workflow.
  • Monitor time, attendance, and job bookings to resolve any issues.
  • Maintain equipment and facilities to high standards using TPM.
  • Optimise offline programming to increase capacity and productivity.
  • Design jigs, fixtures, and production routes using CAD (preferably 3D).
  • Develop detailed manufacturing procedures.
  • Research, develop, and implement new technologies and best practices.
  • Assist assembly and Machine Shop personnel with technical support and problem solving.
  • Provide accurate product costs to Sales for correct pricing and margin maintenance.
  • Lead Root Cause Analysis events and implement corrective actions.
  • Ensure SOP adherence and lead continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Share best practices across IMI and externally to maintain world‑class standards.
  • Perform other duties as reasonably required by the role.

  • HNC qualification or progressing towards a similar Mechanical or Production Engineering qualification.
  • Experience with quality, safety, maintenance, machining, assembly, and testing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Understanding of CAD tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication (English).
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety workplace requirements.
  • Understanding of Lean manufacturing and assembly techniques.
  • Experience with Continuous Improvement tools (VSM, SMED, TPM, Kaizen, 5S, error‑proofing, Kanban).
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacture, Lean Value Engineering, and Value Engineering.
