Detailed Overview

Reporting to the Supervisor, Radiological Technology and the Site Coordinator, Medical Imaging, the Radiological Technologist practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice as well as utilising a client and family centred care model and the vision and values of the department within Fraser Health (FH). The Radiological Technologist performs diagnostic radiographic/fluoroscopic and medical imaging procedures/techniques and related duties, observing safe radiation protection practices.

Duties include receiving and completing requisitions, entering relevant data into the Radiology Information System (RIS), preparing patients for examination, operating radiographic and computerized imaging equipment including processing radiographs and archiving of acquired data, monitoring patients during procedures, monitoring equipment performance and maintaining cleanliness of examination rooms.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all general duty radiographic/fluoroscopic procedures consistent with established standards, procedures, radiation protection practices and protocols. Perform procedures working with radiologists, physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Perform requested examinations observing departmental standards, routines and radiation protection practices during procedure by operating radiographic and computerized imaging equipment.
  • Complete procedures using appropriate equipment, label permanent records, maintain and update records in RIS/PACS and check resultant images for technical quality. Refer problems in image quality to the supervisor. Store digital images using appropriate equipment.
  • Explain procedures and give instructions to patients/clients. Answer questions that may arise.
  • Ensure relevant clinical data is collected for the procedures requested by providing documentation of individualized patient care and recording history and clinical information. Maintain and update records in database accordingly.
  • Prepare contrast agents required for examinations by methods such as filling syringes and mixing barium solutions as required. Prepare tray set‑up for procedures, dispose items after the procedure according to hospital policy and clean instruments for return to Medical Device Reprocessing Department.
  • Monitor patient care and safety by ensuring procedures adhere to department standards and policies.
  • Provide input into quality improvement and risk management procedures and processes.
  • Clean and test equipment for status of imaging, viewing, processing and image recording; perform quality control tests and minor adjustments and/or arrange for necessary repairs; clean technical area and maintain supplies.
  • Perform a variety of clerical duties including those related to patient demographics, histories and data entry.
  • Participate in the instruction of employees and/or students by assisting with departmental orientations, in‑service presentations, demonstrating procedures and answering questions.
