Clinical Fellowship in Oculoplastics (Ophthalmology)
A 1-year fellowship training opportunity in Oculoplastics, supervised by 3 specialists, located at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust.
OverviewThe Oculoplastic service at Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust covers a large population (over 600,000) offering acute and elective care, treating a wide range of pathology. It works closely with ENT, Maxillofacial and Dermatology services. The service includes peri‑ocular oncology drawing tertiary referrals from the South East of England.
Responsibilities- Participate actively in diagnosis, management and follow‑up of patients under the care of Consultants.
- Coordinate service activity and patient management between the 3 Consultants.
- Undertake surgery under supervision and, where appropriate, independently.
- Supervise some of the work of junior resident doctors.
- Provide Emergency Eye Care and on‑call cover as part of the Resident doctor on call.
- Spend 80‑85% clinical time, 40 hours per week, with remaining time for research/teaching.
- Medical degree (delivered in English).
- Completion of Ophthalmic Training (CCT or equivalent).
- 3 years or more experience in clinical Ophthalmology with supporting evidence.
- Fellow of a certified training body equivalent to FRCOphth (e.g., RANZCO, FEBO).
- Full registration with a licence to practice with the General Medical Council (UK).
- Satisfactory general ophthalmic surgical experience with supporting evidence.
- Demonstrable skills and experience in Ophthalmology.
- Demonstrable basic oculoplastic clinical and surgical skills.
- Highly competent in English language;
English native speaker. - Able to demonstrate appropriate level of clinical knowledge based on specification.
- Knowledge and use of evidence‑based practice with understanding of research.
- Experience in teaching.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- IT skills with experience of an electronic patient record system (Open Eyes or similar).
- Evidence of participation in audit/quality improvement projects.
- Self‑motivated, industrious and has initiative.
- Publications.
- Logical thinking, problem solving and decision making.
- Responsibility to maintain a safe and healthy workplace, including reporting hazards, accidents and incidents and following emergency procedures.
- Raise awareness of health and safety issues among staff members.
- Opportunity to become a subspecialist in Oculoplastic and Lacrimal surgery.
- Exposure to common orbital disease (thyroid orbitopathy, trauma, orbital inflammation).
- Research/teaching time within a supportive environment.
- Structure of 80‑85% clinical, 40 hours per week.
