We are looking for experienced, commercially aware Mechanical Estimators to join our Central Estimating team. We have roles nationwide, with hybrid working available, that will enable us to support our regional businesses in the pre‑construction phase of projects.
Reporting directly to the Head of Estimating, or one of our Lead Estimators, your expertise will contribute to securing a high‑quality workload that aligns with our company’s vision, purpose and values.
Key Responsibilities- Analysing drawings, specifications and other documentation to prepare estimates that are technically correct and with an acceptable risk level, from outline drawings and specifications
- Liaising with internal and external engineers, consultants and subcontractors to construct and formulate estimates and resolve issues
- Provide high level pricing information early in the tender for optioneering and budgeting exercises to ensure the most cost‑effective solution offered.
- Participation in the design development to assess buildability, materials, innovation and cost effectiveness of proposals. Identifying and provide alternative design proposals, solutions and value engineering options
- Participate in the preparation of a procurement plan with the procurement department to agree suppliers & sub‑contractors, terms & conditions and discount levels
- Prepare enquiries and obtain competitive quotations for materials and sub‑contracts, assess and compare.
- Maintain an up‑to‑date awareness and knowledge of technical developments and new methods within the industry.
- Get involved in improvements of databases, software and any tools used to make work more efficient.
- Ensure that Client’s requirements and project drivers are incorporated within tenders.
- Attend tender price settlement meetings to present and explain estimate and its basis.
- Cost coding using the standardised system in order to allow meaningful feedback
- Undertake site visits to obtain feedback and information relating to Tender submissions
- Prepare estimating reports for governance and contract hand‑over to ensure meaningful feedback
- Prepare risk schedules to identify and quantify risks and mitigation measures.
- Ensure your own continuous professional development by participating in external networking/conferences/associations/groups, to stay current on industry changes and innovations.
- Maintain a positive and solution‑oriented approach to work, providing open and honest feedback.
- Undertake such other duties, training and/or hours of work as may be reasonably required and which are consistent with the general level of responsibility of this role in all internal and external contact, present a professional and positive image of the department and MWH Treatment as well as maintaining mutually constructive, positive and beneficial relationships.

- Proven track record in delivering specific packages within cost estimates at Feasibility, Optioneering, Detail design and/or Tender stage.
- Good commercial awareness and lateral thinking skills, ideally with an appreciation of various standard forms of contract.
- Proven experience pricing small to medium sized projects and contributing to the design and/or delivery of water, wastewater, or bioresources treatment schemes.
- Good understanding of the processes, equipment, and services commonly used within the water sector.
- Experience in developing project programmes and understanding their impact on cost and delivery.
- Utilise benchmarking data from multiple sources to independently form and assess estimates.
- Familiarity with risk management techniques and their application in estimating.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.

- Site Experience
- A degree in an Engineering discipline (Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Environmental, or Process) or equivalent qualifications; alternatively, qualifications in Project Management or Commercial disciplines, preferred.
- Familiarity with industry‑standard estimating software such as CANDY, CONQUEST, or CAUSEWAY.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and general computer literacy.
- A full UK driving licence.
